Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 10/10/2026I know that abomination at the bottom is supposed to be an 'a', but I can't help but see a fucked-up backwards 'より' digraph. It can't decide what it wants to be; is it supposed to be double-storey (a), or single-storey (ɑ)? 000
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 10/10/2026#RandomGameSaturday I neglected to do a post last week, but here's 'Silent Hill 3'. It's my favourite of the series, but rarely does it get the attention it deserves. Viscerally horrifying with themes I could go on at length over. And Heather is a great character, as well. 050

Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 07/10/2026A significant amount of work today still demands physical labour. However, there were occupations millennia ago which didn't demand physical labour. Furthermore, gyms have also existed for millennia. Also, we already have 'gyms for our brains': they're called libraries and schools. 000

Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Silent Hill f (2025) I'm a year late. But damn was it worth the wait. Immaculate mood and style, a fascinating tale and sublime acting manage to smooth out erratic performance and combat that's functional if inelegant. That was my first playthrough. I'm diving back in when I have the time. 110

Definitely read 'The Satsuma Complex' before this one. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Silent Hill 3 is my favourite in the series. There are so many layers to it that I would gladly talk people's ears off over it. Boy fucking howdy they better be ready to hear about it. 030
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Believe what you want, I guess. I think it's set pop culture and reading back decades and would strongly recommend people read something else, but I can't change people's behaviour. I'm just not here for people furthering and buying into (willfully or not) the views of a reprehensible person. 070
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 05/10/2026And yet it still keeps the franchise in the public conscious. It keeps it relevant. It continuing to be relevant enables people to go and engage in the franchise more, which in turn benefits a disgusting person with wholly abominable views. You cannot in good conscience claim this is separable. 150

Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Like, I've refused to buy Ubisoft games for God knows how long (roughly a decade at any rate), and Silent Hill f is the first properly new Konami game I bought since...what, MGS V: The Phantom Pain? You start messing me about, I'm not gonna invest in your stuff. It's really that simple. 000
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 02/10/2026It's funny seeing people go "gamers will just forget the bad stuff a company did and just consume product". Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I personally really like it, but I did feel when the trailer came out that it was going to be very divisive. I do think the people saying that it's genuinely awful are being very harsh, though. 000

Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Oh neat, Motorsport Manager 2 stuff, let's see... >goes on Steam page >AI disclosure 001
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026No doubt there will come a point where I stop doing Anki input; I already have enough vocab in there to take me through a massive chunk of 2028. But it's an easy, sufficiently painless way for me to pick up on things. Plus I just prefer reading on paper anyway. Just isn't the same on a screen. 000
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026The upshot of all this is this can have a noticeable positive impact on the flow of things. The book becomes easier to follow because I'm not tearing myself away from it so often, and less stuff to try and input into Anki makes everything take less time, so language input becomes much easier. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026I started '犬神家の一族' just a few days ago, and once I got through the prologue, things have started to pick up in pace, mainly because I haven't had to put my head to my piece of paper to jot something I didn't recognise down. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026So, throughout November last year, I read '獄門島' (I figured I'd follow my English translation reading order), and whilst not easy, I encountered considerably fewer 'unfamiliars' throughout. Then in June/July this year I read '八つ墓村' and it was easier still. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026To put that into perspective, these days, it's rare I breach 50 'unfamiliars'. Reading '本陣殺人事件', there were many days, especially early on, that I was noting down upwards of 100. This and one other book got me to write as tiny as I reasonably could to make everything fit the page. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Reading through '本陣殺人事件' as one of my first books was a "jumping into the deep end" moment for me; it features a number of terms I hadn't encountered yet, especially regarding religious (Buddhist), architectural, and criminal subjects. There were also a lot of verbs I didn't know at the time. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026So far, in English, I've read all of his translated works (except 'She Walks At Night'; I'll read that this October), so I know the story beats and generally what names to look out for. In Japanese, I've only so far read three of the books and I'm currently on my fourth. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Now, doing this over time has given me a perspective on how familiarity can make things so much less daunting, and I'm going to use the works of Seishi Yokomizo for my example. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026For context: my process is I read for an hour (sometimes less, occasionally as much as two hours), and as I read, I write down in pencil on a piece of thick A6 paper a word or phrase I don't recognise. Then, using dictionaries, I add what I can to Anki. It's not a short process, but it has helped. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 30/09/2026So, throughout the last nearly two years, I've been reading Japanese books to try and get a level of familiarity with the language. I'm still a complete bozo where grammar is concerned, but what I can say is vocabulary has become so simple now. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 29/09/2026BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea: Episode Two (2014) A very welcome change of pace to something slower and centred on stealth, with a pay-off that ties everything together. If this is the last BioShock game we ever get (it's been nearly 13 years now), it will have gone out on a high note. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 29/09/2026'Amsterdam' by Geert Mak (trans. Philipp Blom) Much like 'In Europe' and 'In America' which followed, it's a thoroughly-researched retelling of Amsterdam's history, from its days as a fishing village, to being a major port city, all the way to the 20th century. 100
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I just took delivery of a new bunch of books off Amazon Japan, and uhh... ...yeah, this ain't great. 000
Daniel Learmouth @daniellearmouth.bsky.social · 27/09/2026BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea: Episode One (2013) Bit of a retread of things here. Rapture feels like a facade more than an actual place here, and the gameplay changes demand a rather different playstyle compared to anything from previous entries. Not bad but certainly the weakest BioShock game. 100
