Flt Lt Richard Sherwood was killed when his Gloster Meteor crashed shortly after take-off from RAF Benson. In 1942, he became a POW at Stalag Luft III after his Bristol Beaufighter was shot down over the North Sea. 📍St Thomas of Canterbury Churchyard, Goring-on-Thames 🇬🇧

Serjeant George Bland of the Royal Army Medical Corps was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1916 for gallantry while in charge of stretcher-bearers. He was later killed in Belgium on 9 October 1917, aged just 26. 📍Oxford Road Cemetery 🇧🇪

Some of the many maple leaf-adorned headstones at Adanac Military Cemetery. Its name comes from reversing the word Canada. Sadly, more than half of the cemetery’s 3,187 burials are of unidentified soldiers. 📍Adanac Military Cemetery 🇫🇷

Wilhelm Voecking died as a prisoner of war in October 1945, five months after the end of the Second World War. His final resting place is within the only German mausoleum in France, where 11,956 German dead of World War Two are buried. 📍Mont d’Huisnes German War Cemetery 🇫🇷

On 5 October 1915, sixteen members of the Royal Malta Artillery were tragically killed in an explosion while filling hand grenades at the Malta Dockyard. One of those killed was Gunner Carmelo Farrugia. 📍Malta (Capuccini) Naval Cemetery 🇲🇹

Visited Coventry War Memorial Park yesterday and stopped at the memorial to Arthur Hutt VC. It was 109 years ago today that Arthur’s bravery, initiative and leadership earned him the Victoria Cross, making him Coventry’s first recipient of the UK’s highest award for gallantry.

Sister Mabel Grigson died at Bighi Naval Hospital, Malta, from gastric dysentery and cardiac failure. Aged 36, she was from Clacton-on-Sea and had joined the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service in 1915. 📍Malta (Capuccini) Naval Cemetery 🇲🇹

Eighteen-year-old Charles Ash of the Hampshire Regiment was killed on this day in 1918. After the war, his body was moved from Gheluwe Road Cemetery to a much larger cemetery. I was amazed to see an address in my hometown mentioned in his epitaph. 📍Hooge Crater Cemetery 🇧🇪

A Stolperstein is a small brass plaque set into the pavement outside the last known home of a person persecuted by the Nazis. The project was created by German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992. Each stone commemorates an individual, helping to remember the person behind the history. 📍Rotterdam 🇳🇱

Embedded in the pavement is a Stolperstein, or “stumbling stone”, commemorating Heiman Hermer. A victim of the Holocaust, Heiman was deported from Westerbork and murdered at Auschwitz on 1 October 1942.

Acting Bombardier Frank Muir of the Royal Field Artillery is one of just five Commonwealth burials in this Somme cemetery, in the village of Martinpuich. The village was captured and recaptured several times during the Great War. 📍Martinpuich Communal Cemetery 🇫🇷

Private Joseph Standing Buffalo, Canadian Infantry, was born in 3 June 1897 in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, son of Grand Chief Julius Standing Buffalo of the Fort Qu’Appelle Sioux Nation. He was killed in action on 29 September 1918. 📍 Bucquoy Road Cemetery 🇫🇷

Lt Thomas Moore was killed on a night-time patrol in the Hébuterne sector. It was reported that he and a lance corporal were surrounded and killed. Buried by the Germans in Puisieux Churchyard, his grave was destroyed in later battles. 📍Serre Road Cemetery No. 1 🇫🇷

Lt Col Norman Teacher was mortally wounded during an attack near Zonnebeke. Faced with an impassable swamp, his battalion came under machine-gun fire at Hill 40 as they attempted to go around it, leaving them without the protection of the barrage. 📍Ypres Reservoir Cemetery 🇧🇪

On 25 September 1915, the British first used chlorine gas during the Battle of Loos. Intriguingly, the remains of Corporal Moon, London Irish Rifles, and several others were found in a trench still wearing their gas masks. 📍Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery 🇫🇷

Staff Serjeant Ernest Baker, Army Air Corps, was killed by a sniper while dug in outside the 1st British Airborne Division’s HQ at the Hartenstein Hotel. He was posthumously awarded the DFM for gallant and distinguished services in Normandy. 📍Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery 🇳🇱

Edward Morchonowicz served with the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade and was killed during Operation Market Garden. For 78 years, his grave was marked as that of an Unknown Polish Soldier, until research finally identified him in 2022. 📍Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery 🇳🇱

On 22 September 1914, three Royal Navy cruisers were torpedoed and sunk by a single German submarine within 90 minutes. Of their combined complement of 2,250, more than 1,400 were lost, including Pte Albert Horton of the RMLI. 📍Noordwijk General Cemetery 🇳🇱

Coventry airman Sergeant George Hughes was lost when his Wellington bomber failed to return from a mission to attack the Hegyeshalom marshalling yards on the night of 20th/21st September 1944. Fittingly, the aircraft’s entire crew are buried together. 📍Budapest War Cemetery 🇭🇺

Jamaican-born Pte Herbert Morris, of the British West Indies Regiment, was executed for desertion on this day in 1917. The real tragedy is that Herbert was just 17 years old, which was too young for overseas service. 📍Poperinghe New Military Cemetery

Twin brothers Thomas & Claude Gronert served in North Africa and Italy before Operation Market Garden. At Arnhem, Thomas was mortally wounded. Claude ran to save him, but was also killed. The 21-year-old twins lie side by side. 📍Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery 🇳🇱

Private Daniel Barrow of the Newfoundland Regiment is buried a long way from home. Killed in action on this day in 1916, a little over a week later his mother received a very matter-of-fact telegram informing her of her son’s death. 📍Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery 🇧🇪

Ngā Tapuwae translates from Māori as “in the footsteps”. This sign overlooks the Somme battlefield and is situated near Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, where 125 New Zealanders are buried and a further 1,205 are commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing. 📍Longueval 🇫🇷

Andrew Duncan was a member of the RNR who lost his life by drowning after the schooner Logwell was sunk in a collision at Boulogne in September 1918. The badge on his headstone is an unusual design that I’ve not seen before or since. 📍Terlincthun British Cemetery 🇫🇷

An extensive article in the Hinckley Times described L/Cpl Miller as “one of the most popular men in his regiment.” The officer commanding his company wrote to his parents, describing him as “a son to be proud of.” He was clearly a highly respected soldier and man. 📍 Ypres Reservoir Cemetery 🇧🇪

Major Noel Money was attached to the 5th Battalion Connaught Rangers and saw action at Gallipoli. For his gallantry, he was awarded the DSO and Mentioned in Despatches. Sadly, he also received a shrapnel wound to the head which would prove fatal. 📍Pieta Military Cemetery 🇲🇹

Seaman Amir Ali was killed off the coast of Portugal when his ship, SS Manaar, was sunk by a U-boat. The ship was one of the first sunk during WW2 and is reported as the first merchant ship to open fire at an enemy submarine. 📍Lisbon (St George) British Cemetery 🇵🇹

A husband and wife killed together when an enemy raider dropped bombs on Torquay on 4th September 1942. The couple who had only been married three months were amongst 17 people killed in what was likely a hit-and-run attack. 📍Torquay Cemetery and Extension 🇬🇧

Alfred Reginald Fydo had a long military career, enlisting with the Royal Marine Artillery in 1911 and serving until 1932. During WW2, he served with the Royal Marine Police. Sadly, he died of illness on this day in 1945, aged 56. 📍Portland Royal Naval Cemetery 🇬🇧

Twenty-three-year-old Gordon Ebbage was a trooper in the Guards Armoured Division. He was killed as Allied forces liberated Albert in 1944. His grave is an example of a place where the First World War meets the Second World War. 📍Albert Communal Cemetery Extension 🇫🇷
