Since its Halloween time & we're digging in the archive again here is a newspaper clip from one of the most prolific witch lore collectors in VA, Alfreda Peel, who gathered ballads & witch lore with her life partner Carolyn Melbard from the 1910s-1950s. These are the instructions to become a witch.
instructions on how to become a witch, they include boiling a black cat until the bones are clean and then throwing them into a stream and seeing which way the bones float. The woman on the bottom right is the informant for the newspaper clipping. She lived in Christianburg VA. the photos are attached to a lined piece of paper and says Keepers of the Folk Lore at the bottom on the page.

It only took two days for our spinach came up, ready to transplant all the other stuff in the days ahead once the rain stops. A little late this year, but better late than never.

Reseeding some beds with carrots, beets, parsnips, and radish’s right before the rains. This late summer has been pretty harsh with some of that stuff. Usually if we get some seed in around this time we can overwinter a ton of stuff.

Finally getting things weeded in the garden from a summer of not paying a lot of attention. The pumpkin patch is doing it’s thing until the frost. Lost some seedlings to high heat, turnips and radishes, especially the daikons are going good. Can’t wait to try some of these local collards and kales.

Just scanned this for my film project & only remembered we had a copy yesterday as the last monuments were taken down in Richmond. I've never seen this image duplicated before, it is a man standing next to the Lee monument on Monument Ave with tobacco growing on all sides. From Valentine collection.

One thing Im proud about with this project is using non sound source material & turning it into sound. For example, I converted all this archive material, newspaper clips, etc, into WAV files using a image to audio translator & collaged them together to illustrate the history. You hear what you see.

Helen Rountree is the local Powhatan scholar & I think shes fantastic. Her Powhatan Indians of VA is a classic. “We’re Still Here” is a good from Indigenous voices. The Beverly book is super interesting, 17 century writings on Indigenous culture. De Soto book is mind blowing if you have not done.
Helen Rountree books on Powhatan Virginia nations 17 century Virginia historian has good stuff about cultural details of mostly Powhatan nations but some others Hernando de Soto book that chronicled their war path and gives an idea of the complex society that was here, mind blowing This scholar would be good to look into. They are doing work on southeastern indigenous nations and comparing shared beliefs throughout the continent and working with indigenous nations.
Dense but interesting stuff

I’ve been waiting for this book Tumult On The Mountain to arrive so I can scan some of these amazing photos of early extractive industry in the middle Appalachians. The White oaks in these photos are the biggest I’ve ever seen.
