Happy #internationalcatday! Dorothy was feeling left out of this post, but loves being the centre of attention (until she doesn't).
A large black and white cat with a black nose laying on her back with her paws up in the air and her white belly on display.

Starting a new project with mushrooms. This week involved creating monotubs (basically plastic buckets with strategically placed air holes), collecting substrate (the growing materials that provide nutrients) and transplanting spawn. I have no clue what I'm doing, but I'm certainly enjoying myself.
Large Black Oyster mushroom A slightly greyish mushroom with many small nodules and golden droplets of liquid.Small growths on a white mushroom. Large white lion's mane mushroom.

Today was listening to fantastic presentations at Innovations in Education, facilitating with an amazing colleague on the importance of an intersectional approach to inclusive pedagogy, and.... snow. mi.mcmaster.ca/innovations-...
A snowy street in a residential neighbourhood where the entire image is nearly whited-out due to snow. There are trees and houses barely visible due to the blowing white flakes.

I fear that a lot of points are going to be missed if we focus too much on what AI can do and not enough on what AI should be used for.
A post on Twitter with an image of a partially finished Keith Haring painting. The text reads "Keith Haring died of aids aged 31 on 16 Feb 1990. His last piece of art, Unfinished Painting, was deliberately incomplete, reflecting the devastating, I quantifiable loss to the arts due to aids".A Twitter conversation.
"Whenever I see this now, I fear the 3rd para is going to be that AI can fix this".
"It's happened. AI has 'completed' the painting".
"AI is really good for missing the point".

Arguing with GenAI today about making a picture face right instead of left. It strikes me that spatial orientation might be a very human concept. It has me wondering what human concepts are simply never going to be machine translatable.
A conversation with ChatGPT where it provides a picture of a purple robot facing right. Then provides exactly the same picture facing the same direction, but states that it's facing left.

A powerful message from @bonstewart.bsky.social at #TESS2023. My take-away: we need to start paying more (and deliberate) attention to the tech and educational practices we're adopting and who is controlling them.
A picture of a presentation slide. On the left is the text "Because some futures are not freedom. Or empowerment. Thank you. :)"
On the right is a picture of a tree with a crown around the trunk and a skull at its base. The text reads: "We live in capitalism - its power seems inescapable. But so did the divine right of kings. Ursula K LeGuin"
