I mean, that's not NOT how ERP therapy works.

Having worked at a clinic that was bought and destroyed by Optum, I'm fairly sure that the decisions that led here were made exclusively by someone so high up as to be unaffected by them, and who cannot be contacted by the many employees now having to deal with the very dumb consequences.

As a psychologist, a pretty good amount of the work really is trying to identify the times when trying to make the feelings stop hurts even worse, then trying to step back from the feeling without turning away from it. Knowing it won't kill you, even though it really tries to convince you it will.

Warning: later in the series, the literal Christian god justifies a priest having sex with a trafficked minor (kind of; the teen girl becomes God, retroactively demonstrating her ultimate purity and justifying the act). Piers Anthony, ladies and gentlemen!

Dubliners is a very good and very readable short story collection! It would be a much lower commitment to see if you actually like what Joyce has to say before tackling something like Ulysses. Honestly, even just The Dead, the final story, is very worth reading.

My understanding is that it's not entirely clear what rights the dmoai had or what rights Homer suggests they might have had, like the choice to refuse to have sex with a suitor. But Odysseus certainly has the right to kill them with impunity, suggesting that they don't even have a choice to live.

I guess I'm responding this way because I'm confused about this user describing Wilson's language as being more patriarchal than past translations.

It DOESN’T take two—the women are slaves and wouldn’t have been able to choose whether or not to sleep with the suitors. Wilson chooses to avoid the implication that the women are somehow at fault as victims of slavery, of rape, and of Odysseus’ actions to protect his household from dishonor.

Dickens, Brontë (Charlotte), Joyce, and Austen all used “literally” as a figurative intensifier. The word ”literally” has been an intensifier meaning “virtually” for literally forever.

I think it gets lost a lot that in therapy, "valid" means "understandable"--your emotions arise from somewhere, they were caused. People who argue against it seem to be arguing against the idea that emotions are always effective and accurate, which absolutely no one has said.

No, because the Luddites were actually cool and fought for worker's rights. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luddite

I’m a psychologist, and in my career I have known very few people I would genuinely suspect would think it’s a good idea to use an LLM to write progress notes. But almost all of the people I’d suspect are psychiatrists.

I don't think you'd call this series a celebration of her if you actually listened to the episodes.

I have a deep, genuine respect for Katherine Applegate taking writing for the 8-12 range far more seriously than many YA authors take writing for the 14+ range. Her next series, Everworld, ran a little bit older and never really found an audience, but was Animorphs for mythology teens. It rules.

I'd love a character I could play in any of the weird tabletop games I've got on my shelf that I swear I'll get to one day

Frankly, it wouldn’t even really be that expensive. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

This would be life-changing. The research and the curriculum exist to do exactly this, from some of the foremost researchers in DBT for adolescents. www.dbtinschools.com/dbt-steps-a
