The thing is though, "move fast, break things" is a fundamentally unscientific ideological call to arms. Unsubstantiated white papers and preprints are the same buying of influence, only in scientific currency. This is wholly within character for guys who view Dale Carnegie's book as foundational.

@nature.com the anthropomorpizing language of this article as well as the equating of agentic loops with actual employees/scientists without any evidence of that conjecture is deeply insulting to scientists and scientific rigor, respectively. 🧪🧬🖥️

This went a different way than I though based on the garbage headline, and gets there in the end: you should assume the company being sued for IP theft is probably doing it to you too. But why would they treat this as a "wake-up call"? Also, props to the Clay Institute for integrity.
OpenAI says it has verified its proof using a programming language called Lean. The Clay Mathematics Institute, whose scientific headquarters are in Oxford, UK, says it will consider whether a solution is valid only after the results have been published in a peer-reviewed publication and been further vetted by the community.

Bad toupee salesmen throwing out endless benchmarks and making outlandish claims that "it's actually the best toupee ever!" have resulted in people storming out of the store shouting "all toupees are horrible!" To address one side requires deflating the other with healthy skepticism.

Dangerous_Chipmunk @dangerouschipmunk.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
So to wrap that up, I would agree that polemical distinctions are a distraction, but note that there is just as big if not greater skew in the opposite direction, backed by serious ad $$$. The hype of over-promising has also given a false perception of LLM capability (disillusionment).
110
Dangerous_Chipmunk @dangerouschipmunk.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
For all the advancements since, there is a fundamental limit to what it can do, constrained by how it works. Your best meals still come from a kitchen. It is a stopgap when the real thing won't suffice. The question then comes down to a societal one: how to gauge sufficiency and what are the costs.
110
Dangerous_Chipmunk @dangerouschipmunk.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
For (2): It is important to remember that when the microwave came out, it was said it would replace your kitchen. Whole microwave cookbooks came out and it was even a feature of DisneyWorld's Tomorrowland. Obviously, it delivered convenience that was inarguable, but also underwhelming.

Dangerous_Chipmunk @dangerouschipmunk.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
To @hailey.at 's point the augmentation is valuable in the short term, and useful for the mundane. But the long term de-skilling reduces everyone's efforts to mediocrity and winnows all output to a LLM flavor, meaning a future of "all mediocre toupees" is not an outlier bias but a central tendency.
110
Dangerous_Chipmunk @dangerouschipmunk.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
As to (1): my experience is that the norm outcome is one of reasonable sounding mediocrity (replies from noted journalists echoed this). I use LLMs plenty. I correct biologists who come to me with convoluted, invalid statistical models because they are not expert enough to know the difference.
110
Dangerous_Chipmunk @dangerouschipmunk.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
(1) I would read the responses to that post from experts in their fields and (2) a better metaphor is a microwave. The goal of a toupee is ironically misaligned to external perceptions. The goal is self-esteem, and while bad toupees detract, living without the toupee is the true form of grace.

Absolutely brutal to the author and I love it. Turns out "there's no clear definition of intelligence" is just tech's red badge of illiteracy.
The AI research community is extremely insular in a lot of ways,” Jager said. “For example, none of these guys know anything about the biological origins of words like ‘agency’ and ‘intelligence’ that they use all the time. They have absolutely frighteningly no clue. And I'm talking about Geoffrey Hinton and top people, Turing Prize winners and Nobel Prize winners that are absolutely marvelously clueless about both the conceptual history of these terms, where they came from in their own history of AI, and that they're used in a very weird way right now. And I'm always very surprised that there is so little interest. I guess it's just a high pressure environment and they go ahead developing things they don't have time to read.

And calling it "subliminal learning" is a desperate and vain evocation of the imagery of "thought" in a static language graph. Have some integrity and speak honestly about what your models show: Distillation imparts bias despite scrubbing due to the indirect relationships in natural language. ```
000
Dangerous_Chipmunk @dangerouschipmunk.bsky.social · 21/04/2026
Yes, data scrubbing failed. But language is fundamentally relational to many, many degrees of indirect relationships. This is not new, it has been published many times. You can make a black hole in your language graph, but it's gravity remains, acting on the weights of words around it.

```rant I feel like I am taking crazy pills. This literally just rediscovers PC projection. Accidentally transforming graph weights into a latent numerical space (the non random numbers it produced), that then is effective at re-weighting the same student model type, but fails with other models.
This is a deeply thoughtful essay from the perspective of someone who would much rather avoid agentic coding at all costs. In a world where some herald Tesla’s FSD as so much “safer” than regular driving, and then sleep behind the wheel with it, this is the kind of voice we need to hear more of.
A fundamental principle of scientific method is axiomatic construction of new principles on the collective framework of prior expertise. Hallucinated references are not typos, they are fabricated evidence, which is unambiguous academic fraud. Negligence is not an excuse. 🧪 doi.org/10.1038/d415...
Scholars are still debating whether and when hallucinated citations should be considered a form of research misconduct. Even major problems can happen unintentionally. For example, authors might use LLMs in a rush to format their reference list, unaware that AI has rephrased the citations, changed DOIs or added made-up references. Policies on AI use differ across journals. Most publishers require authors to disclose the use of AI, although what specific uses need to be disclosed varies. Policies also require human oversight of AI tools. Failing to verify their output could represent a lack of scientific rigour, according to several researchers who spoke to Nature.
One more and I'll stop. "noninferior specificity" is a hilariously irresponsible way to say "loss of specificity (P < 0.001)". Scrambling for positives instead of just saying that it did better on first scans (useful), but for people getting routine screens & in prospective use it gave no benefit.
010
Dangerous_Chipmunk @dangerouschipmunk.bsky.social · 11/03/2026
Oof, worse is Figure 4, where they tried prospective deployment and it basically did worse than humans in every regard. Yet the text tries to completely ignore this and say it "maintains accuracy". Does it though?
The top segment (n = 45,653) reflects retrospective study cases from both screening services included for comparison, reanalyzed using the prospective study’s shorter 3-month ground truth. The middle segment (n = 3,678) reflects cases read at the initial deployment OP (OP1 until the OP update was performed). The bottom segment (n = 5,588) reflects cases read under the adjusted, more specific OP (OP2, latter 4 weeks).
The AI as a second reader is the compelling bit, but the key (common/important metric) is buried in Extended data and not mentioned until the discussion. Human rads could be more sensitive if they called more edge cases, but false positives cause patient harm (distress) & unnecessary interventions.
"Graph showing performance at a case (N = 115,973 participants) and breast (N = 231,268 breasts) level, across all five sites, using a ground truth of screen-detected cancers only (reflecting a common metric in the literature). This metric has a key limitation in that it cannot demonstrate incremental benefit of AI, as it does not include future cancers that developed over the subsequent 3 years. Readers naturally perform well using this metric, due to the gatekeeper effect - that is only cancers that were picked up by the historical double-reader process are considered as cancers, while incremental cancers that the AI system detects are penalized as false positives, rather than rewarded as a true positive. c) zoomed region of b)." [My inclusion]: AI performed much worse at false posiitives. Super weird and inappropriate to be arguing justifications in a figure legend. Also bullshit, as they are trying to argue pre-cancerous lesions the AI detected, or any patient who developed cancer in the next 3-years, knowing full well they don't have the data that says that same lesion AI detected turned into the eventual cancer. Also, pre-cancerous lesions are generally not treated, they are monitored and treated if they show growth over the years. So the AI is adding an inconsequential benefit?
