The photographs show how the dam was rebuilt in 4 months using forced labour and diverted resources. They also show the defences put in place to stop a repeat attack – almost as inspirational and ingenious as the concept of the bouncing bomb. 5/6

This collection and the exhibition at the IBCC shows what happened on the ground. The losses and destruction, its incredibly rapid reconstruction, and the new defences put in place. As a historian of Bomber Command, I was amazed to see the photos and film of the reconstruction and the defences. 4/6

The film often symbolises the acceptable face of the bombing campaign in popular British memory. It doesn’t tell the full story. The target, the dam, is an inanimate object and the focus of the film is on the jeopardy of the aircrew. Only 67 seconds of the film show the damage on the ground. 3/6

When Bomber Command is remembered favourably in this country, it is often through the lens of the boys’ own simplicity of the 1955 film ‘The Dam Busters’. It’s a comforting and familiar narrative of plucky brits against adversity, and an excentric backroom boffin with a problem to solve. 2/6

On the night of 16/17 May 1943, Operation Chastise used bouncing bombs designed by Barnes Wallis to breach the Eder and Möhne dams. 53 aircrew were killed and over 1,300 women and men on the ground – many were forced women labourers trapped in their accommodation. 1/6

A wizard review of the IBCC - The exhibition "doesn't try to tidy the story into something comfortable. It's honest about the scale of loss on both sides... it's portrayed considerately - that’s why it’s so moving." Expect more of the same with the new 'After me, the flood' exhibition in October!
