Filtering the events of the 1980s miners’ strike through the lens of Paul Allen’s stage adaptation of the 1996 film of the same name, this Liz Stevenson-directed revival hit a still-resonant note for 2024, landing as it did in the immediate wake of the summer’s general election, with its timeless tale of dignity, survival and escape through music amid bleak economic circumstances. Beautifully staged on Simon Kenny’s assault course of broken pitworks, and with musical director Matthew Malone bringing members of the Penrith Town Band’s brass playing to life, the excellent ensemble hit every emotional note of this heart-wrenching but highly entertaining story to perfection. it takes unfathomable endless waiting times to get any sort of support as a disabled or sick person. but the proposed legislation Assisted Dying Bill will gives people 2 weeks access to AS.
