Dane County could be in line for several rounds of severe weather today and Thursday. Now is a good time to review your shelter options. When a severe weather warning is issued, head straight to a safe location and then seek out more information! #wiwx

It stresses no place outside is safe from a tornado. An image of tornado damage and text that says 'Tornado Sheltering Guidelines - Seek the best available refuge area immediately when a Tornado Warning is issued. Your chance of surviving a tornado is excellent if you follow these guidelines. WORST OPTIONS - Mobile homes, vehicles, underneath a highway overpass. BAD OPTIONS - large open rooms like a gymnasium, manufactured housing. GOOD OPTIONS - interior room of a well-constructed home or building, basement. BEST OPTIONS - Above or below ground tornado storm shelter (NSSA/ICC 500 compliant), specifically desigend FEMA Safe Room. Stay in place until all clear. An image showing a diagram of a road and shelter locations. Title: Tornadoes and Road Safety. What to do: Get off the road. The best option is to drive to a designated shelter, basement or safe room. OR The next best option is a small, windowless room or hallway on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

What not to do - Do not seek refuge in vehicle, outside under overpass. highway overpass does provide safety from tornado. OR The best option is small, window- less room hallway on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. DO NOT seek shelter under an overpass or tree. This puts you at greater risk of being killed seriously injured by flying debris from the powerful tornadic winds.'
