You can, easily, smelt and work iron with charcoal. Europe only really started using coal because they ran out of forests. I'm pretty sure any viking smelting/smithing in the Americas would have included charcoal burners. (I'm less certain if charcoal burning was already done in the Americas)

Trump’s policies, in general have been a disaster. The attempts to gut government spending in R&D, combined with his immigration policies are having a major impact that takes time to show up in economic statistics. His trade wars are lowering exports of products that take months to produce.
