Nothing but respect for MY Digger

Mystery Men who actually doesn't have any superpowers, but he is very handy with a shovel. He is a clean shaven, middle-age white man wearing a yellow hard hat with a miner's lamp on it, a black protective vest with red trimming, a brown leather jacket, and thick black protective gloves.

For The New York Times, I wrote about how Rod Serling create The Twilight Zone in part because it was the only way in the 1950 and 60s for him to comment on the subjects he cared about most, and how that's a good blueprint for contemporary media to deal with our surreal current moment:

Thrust into production a few weeks after the original's release, Godzilla Raids Again began the pattern of Godzilla battling a kaiju opponent in each film. Though there are some impressive camera tricks here, the effects are noticeably cheaper and the slow dread is replaced by frantic animal combat.

My wife: Are you enjoying your popcorn? Me, my hand bleeding, torn and mangled from constantly trying to maneuver around Godzilla's sharp spines as I try to eat in the dark theater: Yes, dear.

I think my biggest recurring romcom complaint is that, inevitably, there's at least one character or couple that gives me the "Oh great, THIS guy's onscreen." Thankfully, Polar Opposites' cast was likable across the board.

Theme deck for Magic running four copies of Craw Wurm. Your goal isn't to deplete your opponent's life total, but to get all four Craw Wurms summoned at once, at which point you must declare "my, how the tables have wurmed", and dramatically flip the table, scattering cards everywhere.
Craw Wurm, a 6/4 green creature with no abilities and a casting cost of two green, four colourless. It has pretty sickass art of a long green wyrm with a fanged mouth.

A masterpiece of nuclear anxiety and post-war angst, the original 1954 Godzilla uses the monster as a symbol of mankind's relentless atomic hubris. Feeling almost documentary-like in some scenes, its hellfire atmosphere stuns even today. It remains singular in the wider franchise.

The 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers deserves to be in the same conversation as The Thing and The Fly when it comes to providing new angles to the story. A pod people sci-fi/horror for a generation experiencing post-Watergate paranoia.

Instead, it's allowed to wrap on a note of pure, cold assimilation. Donald Sutherland's distorted, inhuman expression, one of the most famous images in horror history, comes off like a trumpet of the apocalypse. Society as we know it ends when there's no one left to question things.

The original Invasion, Thing and Fly remain fantastic and even haunting at times (especially Thing's "Keep watching the skies..." broadcast.) But the original Invasion had a scene of open-ended optimism forced upon its conclusion. This remake does not suffer the same fate.

Daniel Dockery @dandock.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
One thing that's important to note is that Invasion, along with the two other remakes mentioned above, weren't total tonal overhauls of the originals. I think sometimes we reframe horror movie history to suit the arc we'd like to fit it in, and as such, we defang potent work from the past.

The vibe of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is relentlessly creepy. This alien usurp of the human race isn't a nasty subversion of home grown Americana. The America they exist in is an awkward facsimile of life with cracks all around. An atmosphere of constant dread.

The 70s was the heyday of the paranoid thriller - The Conversation, The Parallax View, The Day of the Condor, All The President's Men, etc. This feeling that our institutions and systems hadn't just failed us, but that they were running an entire shadow play alongside us.

Part of Alien's beauty lies in the fact that it emerged in the wake of a bunch of films that were all about the limitless wonder of outer space. And then there's this one, which details what happens when you get lost in a claustrophobic nightmare pocket of the universe.

Today would've been the sixty-fifth birthday of Yu-Gi-Oh! creator Kazuki Takahashi. It tends to get swallowed up in the enormous franchise it became, but I truly believe that his original manga can provide a valuable lesson to artists about process and work and improvement over time.

Hard to think of a more likable monster movie cast than the one in Tremors. It's my ideal horror-comedy hybrid, one where the jokes come from how fun the characters are rather than subverting any of the tension.

But it's also the story of a man who, as his late thirties turned over into his forties, became a standout creator in his field, beloved and respected internationally. RIP Kazuki Takahashi

Yu-Gi-Oh!, like many of its manga peers, is the story of a high schooler overcoming obstacles and finding a friend group stronger than any physical might.

One can lament what was lost when Yu-Gi-Oh! became centered on an indefinitely marketable card game, but what was gained was, in my opinion, one of the most consistently solid artists that Weekly Shone Jump has ever seen. Horror, fantasy, teenage angst, all melded under his pen.

For Takahashi, it's clear that he's getting better and more confident. His line work is sharper and cleaner, his emotions more defined, his pacing more effective. He takes bigger chances with his art, allowing his arenas to sprawl out on the page. His monsters and expressions feel fearsome.

Daniel Dockery @dandock.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This contrasts sharply with something that often marks a creator's early manga - transformation. The narrative evolves, but so does the skill. That kind of cycle, that constant repetition and thought gives one practice like few other industries.

Daniel Dockery @dandock.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
But there's more to it than that. A manga author's life is a grinding one. The schedule is punishing, the expectations are immense, and the industry is hyper-competitive. It's easy to say a creators "fell off," but it's usually that they're crushed.

...and his stories, mostly anthological tales of supernatural karmic justice being distributed by a big-haired teenager's dark half, struggle with their pacing. Just as famous is the fact that, once he introduced the "Duel Monsters game," the series took off in popularity. Readers loved it.
