It's certainly a notable finding that Christian nationalists rarely attend church, but to go from there to saying that this is not a revival of Christianity seems like an unsupportable link. Exclusionary nationalism is Christianity, not in all forms, but in a major form it has historically taken.
"Christian nationalism in Britain driven by people who seldom go to church, says report
Research challenges the notion that the growing visibility of crosses and other symbols reflects a revival of Christianity"

A reminder on this World Mental Health Day: never post. Never read, either. In fact, get off social media altogether, what the hell are you doing with your life, you could be watching birds right now.

I'm very curious if there has been more early GOTV organizing in Hispanic communities, or if this is more organic. If the former, smart play! If the latter, the GOP is in for an even bigger world of hurt than it seems on the surface — and the surface looks plenty big.

This goes against the intuitions of a lot of older people who were socialized into the party alignment of the 1970s-1980s-1990s. But you could make a case that the Trump second term is the most directlyand outwardly anti-Christian presidency in American history.

I looked up the sites for Dems running in the primary to challenge Glenn Grothman. One was a converted personal Facebook page, and the other was just "Such-and-So for Congress." No information, no positions or donation links. Not even sure it had a way to contact the candidate.

So must Dems project religiosity? In some contexts it's helpful, yes. In others not so much. Either way, it's not a magic bullet. If you're full of crap, morally or otherwise, voters will figure that out sooner or later, as many GOP candidates are finding out to their sorrow.
070
Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
That Talarico, etc., can do this helps them come across as authentic. The same thing probably wouldn't work in New York or California, where having a religious identity isn't such a big deal.
170
Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
In the same way, the cultural context in Texas and Kansas demands that people at least know how to speak the lingo of Christianity, whether or not they're "good" Christians.
170
Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The other dimension of authenticity is fit to one's cultural context. It's not exactly the same, but you couldn't get elected in Wisconsin if you hated old fashioneds or the Packers. Why? Because voters would think you weren't a "real" Sconnie.
170
Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
More to the point, Dem faith talk is putting the lie to MAGA amorality. Partly that's because the candidates are good, and partly 2026 presents an unusual opening for those messages to get through.
190
Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
As many people have pointed out, there are and always have been religious Dems. What's happening now is that they've managed to find some candidates who are very good communicators about faith, in ways that sound authentic.

@aselrod.bsky.social mentions Andy Beshear in the pod, but Tim Walz was/is actually really good on this score as well. If you hear him talk about faith, it's clear that it's interwoven through his life.

Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Voters prize authenticity in candidates, the sense that they are not, you know, full of shit. That has two dimensions. First, candidates have to be true to themselves. If they are people of faith, they have be able to talk about it ways that are natural, easy-flowing.

Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Adding a couple of thoughts about this convo, which really was very good. With Talarico, Hamilton and others, do Dems suddenly "get" religion? Do they need to, in order to win the midterms or create a new moral politics? No, I don't think so.

So immigration is one of the few causes shared across the Christian political spectrum, albeit in different ways. In other words, Trump and Miller found one of the few wedge issues that could divide their Christian bases and went hard on it. 2/2

Like Andy says, I'm sorry to hear this. A chaplain should never be aggressive like that, and it's clearly unethical to administer medication to knock someone unconscious instead of relieving pain.

Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes and no? A lot of it involves walking the walk with people. But yeah, realistically, if your relationships suck, there's not much I can do about that.

If you want to come to the end of your life with a happy, hopeful, optimistic attitude, if you want to die a good death, the most important thing I can recommend is: be tight with your family. Otherwise, I'm going to have my work cut out for me.
161
Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The other source of optimism is gratitude. The people I've met who have the most positive outlook on the end of their lives are invariably those who can look back on their lives and feel grateful, especially for the relationships they have had.
121
Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm contributing to that work, and by doing so, I'm answering God's call. In more down-to-earth terms, because I do see my work as part of a bigger story, and do see that it seems to help, I can feel confident that it will continue to make a difference.
140
Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
That sense of being a part of a larger story is one of the sources for optimism, at least from my experience. I can feel optimistic about my work because I ultimately understand it as part of God's project to heal, repair and restore the world.
140
Daniel Schultz @dandadad.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Ritual is important as well. When I say a prayer, bring communion, or preside at a funeral, it's a reminder that "we" as Christians exist as part of a much larger story. That can be immensely comforting, especially for people whose suffering doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

But I thought "I'm not letting this asshole get out of here without a blessing." So I asked him, "What's your favorite beer?" Plain Coors, he tells me, clearly confused by the question. "All right then," I said. "When you go, I'm going to pour out a Coors for you." And I did.

..."and by the end of the day, he's dead, and it's your fault." He was convinced that he was going to hell after he died. "How do you know God's not going to send a chariot down to take you up to heaven?" I asked him. "How do you know the demons aren't going to drag me down?" he replied. Fair point.

Another guy was a Green Beret sniper in Vietnam. And Laos. And Cambodia. He had done who knows how much hinky shit, but the thing that continued to give him nightmares was remembering the buddies he'd failed to protect. "You get up in the morning and have breakfast with a guy," he told me...
