These Rosa mutabilis flowers will soon change their colour to a delicate pink and yellow hue. I think it’s a remarkable plant. #firstflowers #spring #joy #canberra
Two pretty pink flowers of Rosa mutabilis. In a few days they will have changed colour from this punchy pink to a delicate pale pink and yellow hue.

I love the spring plummage that garland the branches and trunk of the Cersis canadenis (Eastern Redbud) in our back garden. #firstflowers #spring #joy #Canberra
Delicate, bright pink flowers standout like a neon sign against the rough bark of the trunk.

And bees love it.

The weather in Canberra has gone very drippy and overcast today. Yesterday was bright and sunny and the flowering plants were enjoying the warm spring sunshine. I took this photo of a Callistemon flower as I potted around in the garden. #Firstflower #spring #joy #Canberra
The bright red bottle-brush stamens of a Callistemon are hanging down from the bush.

Those on the left of the floret, facing the early morning sun, have fully opened.

Those on the right are thinking about uncurling but aren’t in rush to do so.

This floret took my breath away with it’s drpth of colour this morning. #Firstflower #spring #joy #canberra
The photo’s focus is a cluster of punchy violet flowers at the end of an upright stalk.

Immediately below the floret, to the bottom of the photo, two oval green leaves are visible.

The floret is made up of pea-like flowers. The plant is Hardenbergia violacaece.

It is growing in a garden bed with native grasses and chocolate lillies.

The first ever flower on ghis yiung Grevillia juniperina. #firsteverflower #spring #joy #canberra
The first ever flower on a young Grevillia juniperina. It is a bright clean red with the distinctive ‘spider’ like flower.

The leaves match the size if the flower stamens, are pointed and shaped like a canoe. Their colour ranges from forest green to wetland green.

The soil moisture around the plants’ roots is protected from direct sunlight by Eucalypt mulch.

A solitary bamboo stake marks out the plant’s position in the garden.

Signs that winter’s chill is on the wane
A close up of a winter’s garden in Canberra, Australia. Back lit by the late afternoon sun are the purple blooms of Hardenbergia and the wide green leaves of Dianella.

It is such a pleasure to read Virginia Woolf’s beautiful prose. “The sails flapped over their heads. The water chuckled and slapped the sides of the boat, which drowsed motionless in the sun. Now and then the sails rippled with a little breeze in them, but the ripple ran over them and ceased.”

There is beauty in the sparing prose of Kári Gíslason, reflective of the stark landscapes and the harsh realities of medieval life in Iceland's Westfjords. There is no fluff, just an honest retelling of the events preserved in The Saga of Gisli and Eyrbyggia Saga (The Saga of the People of Eyri).

The beauty of this tea tree, awash with white flowers on a perfect summer’s day, just had to be shared.

You know you are in the hands of a master storyteller when you feel a rising sense of dread for the characters with each page turned. Tony Birch, a Fitzroy Blak, is one such author. 'The White Girl' is beautifully written. You just want Odette & her grand-daughter Sissy, to find a safe haven... 💙📚
