Threats of this nature are unacceptable against anyone, though when they are made against an officer of the court for their service to public safety, it's a crime not only against the victim but also the institutions that keep all our communities safe.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, as a member of the Blue Conspiracy, has built and operated an illegal monopoly on health insurance coverage in Michigan, and today we brought this lawsuit for the millions of Michigan households, patients, parents, providers, doctors, small business owners, large employers and taxpayers, and consumers everywhere that are paying the price for Blue Cross’s unchecked market power. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has implemented substantial premium increases and deep reimbursement cuts, unchecked by meaningful competition, to drive up our costs of care, drive down our quality of care, and turn our worsening medical outcomes into their increasing profits. Today we’re taking a significant step toward ending the Blue Conspiracy and their illegal monopoly.

In this time of serious cost concerns in households all across Michigan, from groceries to gasoline, from the gas bill to the electric bill, it is remarkable our utilities continue to demand, and receive, rate hikes as large as we’ve ever seen.

It is likely the MPSC will simply split the difference between the well-reasoned numbers my office proposes and the obscene demand from the utility, as they’ve done many times.

The MPSC should also reject mechanisms, like the one UPPCO proposes in this case for storm costs, because they only allow the utility to raise rates even higher outside of the usual, public rate review process.
