UK economy has been far more resilient than the commentators/gloomsters/forecasters thought. Strong start to 2026 continues despite the headwinds of the Iran conflict - GDP growth of 0.4% in 2nd quarter. What matters most (gdp/capita) is also up 0.4%, and has risen 1% on the year

This funding will push the project forward, preserving our history, boosting local pride, and unlocking new opportunities for the town. There’s still work ahead - but today is a huge step forward for Birnbeck Pier and for Weston.

Dan Aldridge MP @danaldridgemp.bsky.social · 19/03/2026

Birnbeck is one of the most iconic parts of Weston-super-Mare. It’s part of our heritage, identity, and future. It's great to see our government investing in our town after years of being underestimated.

Dan Aldridge MP @danaldridgemp.bsky.social · 19/03/2026

£19 Million secured!!🎉 That's the amount I have secured for the final phases of the Birnbeck Pier - this money will fund the restoration of the Clock Tower 🕰️, North Jetty and the Boat House 🚣‍♂️, with exhibitions, hospitality venues, and a space for skills training.

I don’t make the final decisions, but we do have real influence over those who do. One of our first reports looks at the pressures facing SMEs, and I am calling for changes to the business sector. committees.parliament.uk/publications...

Small businesses are the backbone of Weston’s economy, and I’m doing all I can to stand up for them. 💼 In December, I was appointed to the Business and Trade Committee, where I work cross-party to scrutinise government policy and make recommendations.

Dan Aldridge MP @danaldridgemp.bsky.social · 09/01/2026

I will be working with them to make this happen.

While M&S isn’t returning to the High Street, they do see Weston as a strong place to invest. This isn’t about chasing brand names, it’s about what local people want and need.

Dan Aldridge MP @danaldridgemp.bsky.social · 09/01/2026

Poundland - Big success for Weston. So what about Marks and Spencer? Poundland staying open, and getting a face-lift refurb 🤩 A real win for Weston 💪. And I know many of you are now asking: what about M&S?

Behind every Christmas card and parcel is a team working long hours, early mornings and late nights to keep things moving. The care and effort that goes into making sure presents and messages reach loved ones on time is incredible.

I popped into the local post sorting office to see how the team were getting on during one of the busiest times of the year – and to personally say a huge thank you 🎄📮

I met with the Small Business Minister, Blair McDougall, yesterday, following our Small Business competition, to make sure the voices of local businesses here in Weston were heard loud and clear in Westminster.

A real say in creating skills and opportunities for the next generation - putting our people front and centre. I’ll use this position to ensure Weston gets its fair share of everything, from investment and apprenticeships to trade and tourism.

110

Dan Aldridge MP @danaldridgemp.bsky.social · 28/10/2025

But what does that actually do for Weston❓ It will give us a powerful seat at the table. One of only 11 voices around that table, I will be a passionate champion for our local businesses and entrepreneurs. More influence over how government and companies support towns like ours

SOME EXCITING NEWS!! I’ve been appointed to Parliament’s Business and Trade Select Committee. This committee holds ministers and major companies to account and helps shape national policy on jobs, investment, apprenticeships, exports, and economic growth.

We are only effective when we are united, I'm grateful we had two candidates who believe passionately in a united, progressive party of power. Whatever the outcome, this is a huge opportunity to build a new chapter for social justice across our country. Bring it on! ❤️🌹

Further escalation would be a grave threat to peace and is in no one’s interest. This is a critical and dangerous moment. I urge all parties to show restraint, step back from the brink, and prioritise diplomacy over conflict.

The reports of an Israeli airstrike on Iran are deeply alarming. At a time of growing tension, stability in the Middle East is essential - not just for the region, but for global security, and above all, for the innocent civilians and children who always bear the heaviest cost.

💷£9.9m invested in the South West 📈 Up to 8 MILLION more appointments in the UK every year 🏥 GP surgeries are being upgraded That means 1 in 6 GP practices will benefit, bringing shorter waits and better care. Only Labour will deliver the investment and reform our NHS so urgently needs.
