The programme I run - the MSc in Contemporary History - will be axed, amongst so many others. We've also been told our undergrad courses will need to have a minimum of 20 students over a 3 year period. The bonfire of the universities has truly come for Edinburgh.

New on the blog | Avi Lifschitz and Martin Urmann explore how eighteenth-century essay competitions paved the way for one of the pillars of modern academia, the blind peer review, alongside the issues of the practice, which on the surface seemed egalitarian. Read more here: bit.ly/18thCEssays
A promotional banner graphic for the book Essay competitions in the long eighteenth century, edited by Avi Lifschitz and Martin Urmann. The graphic features the book cover on the right, the background is an eighteenth century pencil illustration, and white text on a blue banner reads 'The first book to provide a preliminary overview of the essay competition phenomenon in Enlightenment Europe.' The logos for Liverpool University Press, Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment and the Voltaire Foundation are placed across the bottom.
