I’m not a big Wordle guy, but each morning I do play MapTap, which helps with improving geography knowledge (because I’m that type of nerd) and today I got my best score of 997/1,000. Three points away from a perfect, precise geography score!

Several weeks delayed but I am still thinking about the family reunion at Sundance earlier this month. While looking out at Mount Timpanogus, Aunt Betty said “This really is a little slice of heaven.” And I don’t think she’s wrong about that.

Sam Neill’s passing hurts. Dr. Alan Grant has long been my favorite character in my favorite movie, but beyond this iconic role, Neill captured so many emotions across so many genres of film in often the most subtle but brilliant ways.

And some final poetry for this 4th of July

Starting today, when the Continental Congress voted for independence, and ending on July 4, I’ll be sharing some of these poems that I believe can be be described alongside the Portuguese word saudade—a melancholic sense of nostalgia for someone or something which may or may not have existed.

So, as I am prone to do, I started to write. This wound up resulting in a series of poems about America in the lead up to her 250th celebration; her lands, her people, and her ever evolving legacy from her namesake (Amerigo Vespucci) to the roads connecting us all as Americans.

Not to mention this is the first Independence Day I’ve not been in the country for, and it’s a notable commemoration too. In the midst of research for a book, and in preparing for my travels to Portugal, I found myself further enveloped by the poet Fernando Pessoa and his works on Portugal.

I knew in anticipation of this year’s Independence Day, I wanted to do something different. I’m as big of an American history nerd as most anyone can be (I run an entire account based on presidential history for crying out loud!) and yet this Independence Day, I am awash in conflicted emotions.

I've read 30 out of 100 on the list. There are so many incredible novels here but I can’t help noticing a glaring lack of genre fiction (as does often happen with these best of reading lists). No The Lord of the Rings? For The Guardian too this feels particularly perplexing.

It’s distressing to me how little coverage there is about the race to fill the Secretary-General position at the UN. Given the state of global politics, this is perhaps the most critical choice the UN has faced in years for the world’s most impossible job. 🇺🇳 youtu.be/7vZVVTB4w2I?...

Just found out that Benjamin Bartlett passed away and I’m so saddened to hear this. He was a brilliant composer and his works on the BBC’s Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Beasts are some of the most imaginative and unique compositions available. He will be deeply missed.

The latest from @patrickhwillems.bsky.social on @nebula.tv now is just phenomenally good. As someone who wants to write a dinosaur book trilogy, Patrick details a number of great reasons why dinosaurs (despite our collective love for them) are surprisingly sparse in the cultural zeitgeist.

I absolutely love this. In a day of heightened political and cultural tension, along with echo chambers on social media, it’s wonderful seeing common ground, commradarie, and even friendship with those who think differently than you. Jake Chance is also a great host! youtu.be/lU65qITIZyc?...

In my testimony, I highlighted Colorado’s LGBTQ+ history, the legal parameters around victim protection, and the need for a bill such as this. It was an honor to be asked to testify by Rocky Mountain Equality and I’m deeply humbled to have contributed a small part to help enact this bill into law.

I don’t think it’s dawned on people as severely as is needed, but CBS barring interviews and mandating censorship in news due to FCC fears is fascism. I do not mean that lightly. And Stephen Colbert doesn’t get nearly enough credit for his continuous fighting against the capitulation of CBS.

Hi!! I watched 112 movies in 2025, infusing more than 70 new releases. While I’ve not been blogging about award season this year, I’ve been very excited about CINEMA, which has had so much to offer (and I’ve only seen a relatively small sample). Here are my top ten films of 2025!
