What an honor to receive the 2025 Vaikom Award for Social Justice from the Government of Tamil Nadu—in the name and spirit of Periyar. His legacy calls us to action: end discrimination in all its forms—caste, gender, sexual orientation, religion—and make self-respect a lived reality for everyone.

Dear #litagents, I'm happy to present an #agentsguide for a revised version of WE SANG DOWN THE EMPIRE an 85K word Adult #SPACEOPERA. This will be pitched for #DVpit! #WOC #SouthAsian #Asian #A #SF #SFF #POC ALT

A Speculative Fiction Space Opera
85,000 Words
Freeing the Galaxy
Begins with Healing Yourself

This features an ethereal image from Joshua Mays with a woman holding a globe of sound magic. The pitch is:

Washed-up alien musician Nesamma Abbas joins a rebel rock band plotting a galaxy-wide uprising against the Human Empire. As the rebellion hurtles toward its final battle, she must confront her past, master the ancient martial art of sound, and choose
between revolution and healing the galaxy.

This is the comparisons page showcasing books with similar themes to WE SANG DOWN THE EMPIRE
The First Book is Rebecca Roanhorse's Black Sun with this text: Epic in scale
Explores generational trauma
Dazzling System of Magic

The next book is Space Oddity by Catherynne Valente with this text:
Distinctive Worldbuilding
And Marvelous Alien Races

The Last book is A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers with this text: Soothing Narrative Philosophical and Poignant Exploration of Healing

This is just an excerpt of WE SANG DOWN THE EMPIRE:
Everyone can recall the first time they heard or saw Nesamma. Mine was outside a café in New Jerusalem. Her wide eyes, rimmed with golden kohl, her bronzed java skin, lean, quick frame, and her hair that cascaded like liquid onyx past her hips—I remember it all.

I never knew what I was missing until I heard the longing in hers. Raw and husky, with the timbre of truth, such a voice comes once in a generation, once in a galaxy.

Even now, in certain alien districts on Earth, they whisper her name like that of a prophet who offers mystical proofs. Was she not trained by Oopan Brass, the last singing-warrior monk of Lethaa? A genius in his own right, blending the arts of war and song. The monks of Lethaa stood at the forefront of each battle, their fierce drums and songs the single force capable of turning the tide in their favor.

Before her final performance, Nesamma began with a quote from their holy book: “A song is a thing of both physics and psyche, for the right song can slice glass as easily as it can open an opponent’s heart.”

WE SANG DOWN THE EMPIRE's opening:"Nowhere in New Jerusalem, as the sun sank behind the horizon of aging buildings, was there even a hint of change. And yet, it was there, waiting. Here in the capital of empire, the rot of power met the chaos of millions yearning for a different destiny." #DVparty

This card is my third day entry into the Diverse Voices Pitch Day for the hashtag #DVparty. We are sharing our opening lines. So this card features a capitvating and ethereal women of color singing in galactic space with a space lute. I have underneath it shared my opening lines to my novel WE SANG DOWN THE EMPIRE: Nowhere in New Jerusalem, as the sun sank behind the horizon of aging buildings, was there even a hint of change. And yet, it was there—waiting. Here in the capital of the Human Empire, the rot of power met the chaos of millions yearning for a different destiny.

Meet the MC of my #spaceopera WE SANG DOWN THE EMPIRE: Nesamma Abbas a pop star who sang the Human Empire to its knees and pushed galactic history to the brink. Outrageous, kind, and wildly entertaining, her journey to heal herself and the galaxy is one of my favorites. #DVparty #booksky #writersky

This graphic is part of the #DVparty pitch campaign where for Day 2 we share the main characters of our books. My book is named WE SANG DOWN THE EMPIRE and my main character is named Nesamma Abbas. Say her name, and it echoes across every star system of the dying Human Empire. The enigmatic pop star who sang the empire to its knees, she drove galactic history to the brink of chaos.

Born to blaze across the stars, Nesamma lost everything when the Empire razed Jangoa, her homeworld, stranding her on Earth—alone and out of options. The empire’s brutality shook her faith in her lineage. For Jangoans are a rare people who can turn song into power. Refusing to be counted out, she joins a rebel rock band to heal herself—and to help free the galaxy.

The graphic features an ethereal women of color holding a globe of sound in a futuristic landscape of an alien landscape. It features the beautiful art of Joshua Mays.

Hey #DVparty! Here’s the moodboard for my #SpaceOpera WE SANG DOWN THE EMPIRE. Washed-up alien musician Nesamma Abbas joins a rebel rock band to take down the Human Empire with a martial art of sound. She must confront her pain, master her powers and choose between revolution or redemption.

Mood board of my upcoming Space Opera We Sang Down the Empire. It features ephemeral and evocative art of artist Joshua Mays to convey the spritual element of the martial art of sound that is at the heart of the book. There are women of color in space age futuristic background and magic practices.

Not a fan of how MAGA is already spinning this into attacks on the left. The right needs to own the culture of political violence that’s now coming for them, too. Bullets aren’t partisan—they’re coming for all of us. We need real gun reform now. #GunReformNow #EndPoliticalViolence

This is not funny. This is disturbing. No standing present should be proud to evoke images of war against a domestic city (or any city for that matter). The militarization of our cities is dangerous & must be stopped. Bless the organizers who are creating mutual safety in the face of state violence.

This Dalit History Month, I honor my mother who passed on March 31. She was the love of my life—a pillar in the caste equity movement, healing many with her cooking, laughter, and boundless love. She will be cremated tomorrow. Our family's ask: please pray for her soul’s peaceful passage. Jai Bhim.
