The PQ anti monarchism stance is kind of funny, considering Quebec has more royal imagery on its flag than any other province (nothing but royal and religious symbols). Then again, as with the province's double standard around religion, this is probably more about team sports than principles.

It makes sense in the context of providing services, and I assume it is happening de facto down there. Of course it would be better to include other languages (I see many at ATMs in large cities), especially Indigenous ones, but major blocs (Spanish down there) is a good start.

Agreed. It ain't as common as bilingualism in Nederland or Belgium, and not as spotty as Ireland. But it is well-established in enclaves and cities. And since official bilingualism has become a policy there are more non-native speakers learning it. But sadly a lot of people proud to be ignorant.

Complicated, but there has always been living francophone culture throughout Canada, which is why the federal policy of official bilingualism, and francophone CBC service throughout Canada is important. In many ways it is more important outside Quebec.

It is unity on both sides. Journalist Chantal Hébert pointed out on the day the trade deal blew up that when Carney declared that French language rights were a red line it is the first time there has not been a reaction from some in the rest of Canada that it constituted "giving in to Quebec".
