A rather attractive butterfly resting on a beautiful pink and violet blossom in a nearby garden. The more I look at the butterfly and its colourful markings, the more I am amazed by the complexity and intricacy of Nature’s creations, particularly those that are ephemeral.

Shirakawa-go World Heritage Gassho Houses, Nanto, Toyama, Japan in cherry blossom season. The Gassho houses are renowned for their very steep roof pitch and extremely thick thatch. They are still used as residences for local villagers although this is a public park. Oil painting by Dai Wynn.

Nature never ceases to amaze. Here in Mill Park, a northern suburb of Melbourne, Australia, is a very old fallen tree. Probably a river red gum of which there are many in this area. Instead of falling due to advanced age, or possibly a wind storm, this tree has reinvented itself. Oil painting.
