He was also responsible for producing and presenting the television show Reslo (Wrestling), which aired weekly from 1982 to 1995 on the Welsh-language broadcaster Sianel Pedwar Cymru (S4C). Notably, Reslo was the only British wrestling show to feature women wrestlers, whose inclusion was otherwise banned on TV outside of Wales – a point actually highlighted by Michael Cole during the Clash at the Castle broadcast. After ITV cancelled World of Sport in 1985, Reslo became the sole British pro-wrestling show on terrestrial television, underscoring its unique popularity in Wales.

For truly classic, how about an IWW cartoon from 1919?
IWW cartoon image from 1919 showing a capitalist sat outside his factory sadly saying “they can’t run the factory without me.” And a happy worker responding “what did you simp ever run?! You always hired somebody for that purpose.”

And there are some great quotes you could use as well: www.cia.gov/readingroom/...
“… used as a conduit for CIA money, Ms. Steinem is quoted as saying of the CIA agents, “with whom she collaborated,” as Kaiser put it:: “I found them liberal and farsighted and open to an exchange of ideas.” “The CIA,” she declared, “was the only one with enough guts and foresight to see that youth and student affairs were important.” A few days later, the New York Times carried a similar story quoting Ms. Steinem as saying of her CIA connection: “Far from being shocked by this involvement, I was happy to find some liberals in government in those days who were farsighted and cared enough to get Americans of all political views to festivals.”

TKO CFO Andrew Schleimer discussing Freedom 250 literally minutes later on the exact same call his C-suite colleagues are also taking part in: "...we incurred significantly higher-than-normal costs, which we partially offset with sold out global partnerships inventory. As a reminder, we did not sell tickets and therefore did not record any live events revenue. This is a point I made in my recent piece for @renewaljournal.bsky.social - when it comes to the current cast of characters who dominate politics, anyone who hasn’t been listening to QAA, True Anon, Chapo, etc is playing serious catch-up. Constant shock @ known stuff. renewal.org.uk/articles/in-...
From social media’s margins, left-wing ‘shitposters’1 have long replied to jour-
nalists’ encomia to Mandelson with the infamous photographs of him alongside
Epstein. Listeners to podcasts such as True Anon, Chapo Trap House, and The
QAA Podcast (formally, QAnon Anonymous) were familiar with Epstein’s British
elite connections. As outlined below, enough evidence to warrant an investiga-
tion into both Mandelson’s and Mountbatten-Windsor’s private dealings with
Epstein while in public office had been evident since 2023 at the latest. From
this vantage point, the professed shock of broadsheet columnists and elected
politicians felt less like surprise and more like gaslighting.
Many in the media treated any mention of Epstein’s association with British
power as conspiracy theory. Such narrowing of reasoned public discourse was
made easier because these concerns were largely voiced by people already
dismissed as ‘unserious’: ‘dirtbag’ podcasters, unapologetic left-wingers such
as Zarah Sultana, and the aforementioned social media shitposters. The whole
episode ultimately revealed a cognitive failure amongst the class of people paid

the seepage of ‘great replacement’ rhetoric into mainstream politics, the harms
associated with disinformation have been turbocharged by the Internet age. For
most of the democratic left, the reflex is instinctive: defend reason, pluralism,

Part of the genesis was the notable difference in reaction of mainstream political commentators vs. dismissed left voices - ‘shitposters’, ‘dirtbags’, etc. - who had been shouting into the void for years. Also the fact the UK gov. almost toppled & political studies seemed totally unprepared (2/2)

I have a provocatively titled piece in the latest issue of @renewaljournal.bsky.social, in which I propose that among the lessons of the “Epstein files” revelations is the value of a properly directly, healthy paranoia suited to an age of opaque networks, dark money, and unaccountable elites. (1/2)
Title: In defence of paranoia: rethinking
politics after the Epstein Files

Abstract: Th is article argues that a refl exive dismissal of ‘conspiracy’ has left political analysis blind to the routine operations of elite collusion, a failure exposed in stark terms by the Epstein case. It calls for a disciplined, evidence-led ‘paranoia’ capable of tracking power across the opaque ‘parapolitical’ networks that structure contemporary politics.Just as politics itself has a ‘Too Difficult’ box32 – long-term problems such as
climate change or media regulation that are quietly shelved because they are
complex, unpopular, or resistant to accessible solutions – so too, it seems, does
political studies. Structural questions about the influence of security services,
corporate lobbyists and/or organised crime on democratic outcomes are almost
entirely nudged to the margins, bracketed as conspiratorial and excluded from
peer-reviewed publication. Instead, answers are sought where data is more
accessible and ostensibly transparent – elections, legislatures, policy pro-
grammes – and approached in turn from a perspective buuilt upon broadly
pluralistic assumptions. This matters, because despite their relatively small
readerships, the outputs academia produce provides a key evidential basis that
structures wider political discourses.
When political scholarship declines to grapple with these darker dimensions
and subsequently fails those seeking reliable, authoritative sources, it cedes
fertile ground that can, in turn, be exploited by more malicious or misguided
actors. Movements like QAnon weave genuine historical conspiracies – such as
MK-ULTRA, Operation CHAOS, or Project Paperclip – into their narratives of
mass deception. In doing so they blur truth and fabrication to increase the per-
suasiveness of their fantastical claims.33 In short, when scholarship fails to offer
rigorous analyses that take account of the darker workings of power, demagogues
and opportunists readily fill the void.

Some thoughts from me in Libération today about the UFC fight on the White House lawn: www.liberation.fr/internationa...

Never underestimate the difficulties for Plaid with a civil service, third sector and public services - key for delivery - that is born and bred (and related often) to Labour. There the ‘smallness’ is also something that could constrain rather than enable. TBC link.springer.com/article/10.1...
Another interviewee reflected, “the issue here is that we’re living in a one party state—which is bad for everybody’s health including the Labour Party’s—it means we do have to remind people, anybody Left-of-centre, that there is a role for mutualism…” (Participant 51). In a similar vein, a policy officer with a charity observed “you’re fishing in a small pool, isn’t it?… there’s not much point in courting the other Assembly Members [AMs] [i.e. opposition parties’ AMs]—they won’t get in [i.e. be in a position to form a government]’ (Participant 8). Another said, “you are left with around two dozen Labour [Party] AMs… chances are you’ll be dealing with them for the foreseeable future” (Participant 61). Another policy officer said, “really there is only one show in town, [the] Labour [Party].We’re massively stretched resource-wise, there’s only two of us here… you have to ask yourself ‘can it [engaging opposition parties] be justified?’ ‘Where’s the pay-off’? That’s the challenge we face…” (Participant 23).

Coming back to this, it would appear he was indeed chosen *for* Trump. The timing does indeed fit. 🤷🏻 www.ft.com/content/a829...

Starmer delayed his final choice until the US presidential election in November 2024 to see who won. Former Labour foreign secretary David Miliband was seen in Number 10 as the frontrunner had Kamala Harris emerged victorious, but the head of an international humanitarian body was deemed to be an unlikely fit with Donald Trump.

“When it was Trump it was clear that it was going to be a bear pit,” the Downing Street insider said. “Peter Mandelson was seen as the best person to go into the bear pit.”

One explanation for such behaviour is simply that it’s strategic. A former boxing promoter, Trump has become a fixture at combat sports in general, especially Ultimate Fighting Championship (which merged with WWE to form the media conglomerate TKO in 2023), whose CEO, Dana White, was one of the first people brought on stage at his victory speech. By attaching himself to entertainment forms widely dismissed in polite society, Trump burnishes his anti-establishment vibes while reaching out to a younger, often politically apathetic, male electorate that populates these fandoms.

Assassinations, Conspiracy theories, and the Pro-wrestling-ification of US
Politics

In 2016, Donald Trump became the first WWE Hall of Famer to be elected U.S. President. In
2024, he became the first president to have a professional wrestler attend his inauguration:
WWE Superstar Logan Paul. Accused by the comedian Theo Von of tampering with his chair
during the ceremony after it collapsed, sending him into Paul’s lap (conveniently while Paul
was filming), the YouTuber-turned-wrestler hit back on X: “I’m a WWE Superstar! That’s how
you know it wasn’t me. […] Trust me, if I wanted to hurt you with a steel chair, I would do it!”
Later that evening, Fox News viewers witnessed WWE legend and infamous racist Hulk
Hogan tear his suit apart during the channel’s live coverage of Trump’s post-inauguration ball,
revealing a ‘Trumpamania’ T-shirt.
If this is the new normal, how can we gain a handle on contemporary US politics? As
mainstream approaches to the story of politics fail, we may need to search for answers in
some weird and wonderful places. Two such areas, I propose, are the phenomena of pro-
wrestling and conspiracy theory which, taken in conversation with each other, help expose
the spectacular violence that suffuses Trumpian politics.
Professional wrestling has long been used as a flippant m

An old favourite from 2001: Peter Mandelson’s “strange stare” at the Bilderberg conference. From Jon Ronson’s ‘Them: Adventures with Extremism’. This was back when Bilderberg was secretive even denied, rather than discussed as normal on the Ten O’Clock News, with photographs of people going in.
Selection from Jon Robson’s “Them: adventures with extremists” (2001, p.126)

An old bus cruised up the drive. I paid little attention, assuming it was full of hotel workers. Only Brendan scrutinised the occupants. I glanced over. Brendan seemed frozen to the spot.
“Brendan?” I said.
“Brendan!” said Free, sharply. “What is it?”
“I looked through the window,” he explained, finally, “and I focused on one person, and he was staring …Selection from Jon Robson’s “Them: Adventures with extremists” (2001, p. 127)

… at me. I was standing with my camera in hand, and this person … just stared.”
“What kind of stare was it?” I asked.
“It was a strange stare,” he said. “It was a different type of stare. Yes. He looked *down* at me. As if he was staring right through me.” There was a pause. “I couldn’t even life my camera.”
“And who was it?” I asked.
Then Brendan said, softly, “It was Peter Mandelson.”
There was a long silence.
“Peter Mandelson?” I said.
“I’ve never seen a stare quite like it,” said Brendan.
