A relic, something physical connecting a person to a saint, was central to #medieval Christianity. Saints could be local martyrs, local bishops, martyrs from Rome, or someone from the next county over, their bones obtained in a relic swap (or a theft). cdalebrittain.blogspot.com

Langres, city of the Romans (it still has its Roman gates), city of Diderot, where church and state met in the twelfth century. What else does it have? #medieval cdalebrittain.blogspot.com

Medieval manuscripts often have curious images in the margins, sometimes witty, sometimes bawdy - a chance for the illuminator to get away from serious topics and make fun of his society. cdalebrittain.blogspot.com/2026/06/marg...

Coming soon! "Still Medieval After All These Years." We think of the Middle Ages as very far away and long ago. But a lot of what we take for granted originated then. What was life then really like, and how do medieval institutions still affect us?

Here's a similar haying scene from a mosaic floor at Tournus (Burgundy), probably 12th century.

Medieval people assumed (as we still do) that scary monsters like manticores lived off in distant lands. But how did monsters become a comment on society? cdalebrittain.blogspot.com/2026/05/medi...

Wooster OH is a county seat, but its county is almost entirely agricultural. At least 1000 peaceful #NoKings protesters with homemade signs filled the square. You don't have to be Big City to want autocracy gone.

Crocuses have appeared! Optimistic little flowers, they may get snowed on but that won't stop them.

Are there things you want to know about the Middle Ages? Still time to make suggestions for a forthcoming book. cdalebrittain.blogspot.com

Big cities today all have problems with rats. Did medieval cities have rats? For that matter, did medieval scientists have lab rats? cdalebrittain.blogspot.com

Quiet Wooster Ohio turned out maybe 1500 protesters against Kings & Tyrants. We lined the sides of the city's main downtown intersection, chanting and waving mostly homemade signs. Hundreds of cars drove through honking in solidarity. Totally peaceful.

A common image on medieval churches is a donkey playing a harp. Where did this odd image come from, and is it even Christian? cdalebrittain.blogspot.com
