A solar eclipse. On Saturn. By Titan. Photographed from Earth. 📷: AJ Smadi (StardustAstro/Correct_Presence_936)

Saturn seen during the day from Earth, oriented with its ring system almost edge-on. Small points of light near the planet are its major moons. A dark circle on the planet itself is the shadow of Titan.

Astronomers using NASA’s Webb Telescope have discovered a new giant planet: Beta Pictoris d! Hidden in one of the most studied planetary systems in our galaxy, it's the third planet found orbiting the young star. 🌌🔭 1/4

Artist's concept of the Beta Pictoris planetary system. One edge of a smooth, dusty disk that looks like cloud wisps extends across the upper third of the image. Just below that, in the left third of the image, the star glows white and is small. Just to the left of the star there is a tiny white dot, planet Beta Pictoris c. To the right of the star, about twice the distance between Beta Pictoris c and the star is another bright dot, representing planet Beta Pictoris b. A third planet, Beta Pictoris d is larger than the other two, and appears in the right third of the illustration. The planet has subtle orange cloud bands, and the side facing the star is illuminated. Below this planet, the other wispy edge of the dusty disk that circles the star crosses the bottom right corner of the illustration below Beta Pictoris d from 4 o’clock to 7 o’clock. The black background of space is speckled with distant stars. The words "Artist's Concept" appears at the lower left corner.

This is a real image. Taken by Voyager 1 in 1979, the icy moon Europa floats above Jupiter's swirling Red Spot maelstrom. The shadow is from Io, another of Jupiter's large inner moons, which is out of frame. Oh to see this view with my own eyes (safely shielded from the lethal radiation fields)

The swirling face of Jupiter, with the Great Red Spot at lower right. At lower left, difficult to discern from the cloudy backdrop, is Europa, lit from the right. At upper right is a dark circle—the shadow of Io.

M27: The Dumbbell Nebula apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap26062... Is this what will become of our Sun? Quite possibly. The first hint of our Sun's future was discovered inadvertently in 1764. At that time, Charles Messier was compiling a list of diffuse objects not to be confused with comets.

Here in Earth's northern hemisphere, today is the Summer Solstice. It's the longest day of the year, with the shortest night, and it's also the start of astronomical summer. But from now on, the days get ever so slightly shorter, the nights ever so slightly longer. Because Winter is coming.

The 2018 northern hemisphere summer solstice as seen from space by the GOES East (GOES-16) satellite on 21 June 2018.
