Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 05/04/2025Viburnum are so beautiful this time of year. A snapping turtle even stopped to admire them. 🌱 #garden #gardeningfeed #flowers 2121
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 21/03/2025I'm in Eastern, NC. The first lilies in the ground start popping up here in early March. I haven't had any issues with growing them here. 010
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 21/03/2025I put the scales in ziploc bags with damp peat moss for 3 months. The scales will form little bulblets at the bottom. Some of the scales disintegrate and only the small bulblets are left. I plant the small bulblets in trays. It will take a few years for them to become big bulbs. 120
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 21/03/2025It works well. I linked to an article about it in another post. I didn't mention that I put the bag in a shoebox for the 3 months. I then took the bag and vernalized it in the refrigerator until I was ready to plant. 120
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 20/03/2025Fritillaries can also be scaled in the same method as lilies. Daylilies cannot be scaled. Several bulbs can be reproduced through twin scaling. This article talks about bulbs that can reproduced through twin scaling and includes directions to do it. www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/inde...pacificbulbsociety.orgTwin Scaling | Pacific Bulb Society 030
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 20/03/2025I had pictures of them in bags but I'm not sure where the pictures are. This is a great article that describes the process. I peeled from the bottom of the bulb. I wet some peat moss in a ziplock bag and placed the scales inside for about 3 months. www.northstarlilysociety.com/2014/Propaga...northstarlilysociety.com 160
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 20/03/2025Garlic and pears are two of my favorite things to grow. The pear blooms are a little early, so there is always a chance for a late frost. That is a problem with a warm late winter in the South. 🌱 #garden #garlic #trees 2566
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 20/03/2025Small lily plants that I started in trays. They are the result of scaling. Scaling is the removal of the outer scales of a lily bulb to create new bulbs. 🌱 #garden #plant 6845

Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025Planting extra is a great idea. I’m with you on 2031. I have so many seeds that I plan to get around to. 010
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025I’m in NC. I grew up in a different part of the state than I live now. I was used to growing in zone 7. I am now in 8. Even subtle differences can mean learning new things. You will get used to it. 100

Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025My family is the same way, and they have stopped joking about it as well. 😆 010
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025I am not surprised about peppers. Do you find that some peppers have a low germination rate in general? I find that some of the hot peppers have that issue. 210
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025Do you find that you have high germination rates with Lupine in general? 100
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025I like your expectations for germination. After the first year, it's difficult to predict germination. Six seeds are good number to plant to get at least one to come up. 010
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025There are so many variables that go into viability. How seeds are stored definitely affects viability. 110
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025Wow, you have some old seeds. It's great that you're making an effort to check the viability of the seeds. It's giving you a chance to make room for new seeds in your stash. 😆 010
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025That's great! Tomatoes are one of my favorite things to grow. I always buy more seeds than I need. The seed catalogs have so many varieties. 000
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025I understand replacing seeds carried at seed libraries. Do you have many seeds left over from year to year? 100
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025That is why I don't have a quick and fast rule for throwing away seeds. There are so many variables that come into play with seed viability. 000
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025It's always nice to hear about others' success. I imagine that some of the rediscovered heirloom seeds weren't new seeds. I always keep my flower seeds as well. 120
Reposted by Dahlia Bloom Thyme4Flowers @thyme4flowers.bsky.social · 10/02/2025I never toss my seeds. Some of the flowers I am currently starting are from the 2019 seed catalog. This is my Lupine with a 50% germination success. 2103
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025You found a great way to repurpose the seeds. It's hard to throw seeds away. Those of us who love to buy seeds always end up with so many packs. We repeat every year. It is easy to end up with more seeds than you could ever plant. 120
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025It is a great source. I use paper towels to test for viability. I've also done the float test. 010
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025That is interesting. I haven't noticed much difference in viability if the older seed is not much older than the new seed. I should start keeping records of viability. 020
Dahlia Bloom @dahliabloom.bsky.social · 10/02/2025Many of us buy new seeds yearly and do not throw out old seeds. I have found that some seeds last past their advised expiration. Has anyone else seen the same thing?
