Happy #Wednesday100! Have some Modern AU Jenny and Claire, enjoying a drink since the kids are all grown up and ignoring them. Title is from Tennyson’s “Ulysses” and means “to drink life to the fullest.” More or less.

Drink Life to the Lees

“Look at them, gigglin’ like children over good whisky,” Jenny says, shaking her head at Brianna and Marsali as they run up the stairs with their bounty.

“Not the best,” Claire points out, sliding the hidden panel loose and producing their shared favorite. “We’ll let them think they’ve gotten away with something.”

“And now we ken Marsali’s no’ pregnant yet. I’m surprised Fergus let her out o’ his sight. Or that Jamie let you out o’ his. I suppose you told him you’ve missed me, so he’d go off wi’ Ian.”

“I only told the truth. Drink up, will you?”

Happy #Wednesday100! This one’s Modern AU JamieClaire, adjusting to Faith being away for university. Began with an image of Jamie on FaceTime with John Grey, which is where it opens. Claire POV.

Growing Pains

“Faith loves LSE, Jamie.” When Jamie makes a skeptical noise, John adds, “I promise she doesn’t need to move into our guest room.” John and Hector’s twins were in the NICU too. They all know what it is to parent surrounded by wires and monitors. Where alarms nearly drown out loving words. Where hope is measured in ounces, and deep breaths are miracles.

After they hang up, Claire takes Jamie’s face in her hands. “She was so small, Sassenach. You remember.”

“She was. But she’s strong. Like always.”

Faith calls in the morning, and Jamie’s smile is its own sunrise.

Happy #Wednesday100! I stabbed everyone a little bit with that Bree drabble last week, I know. So here’s S8 Bree telling her parents about meeting Brian Fraser in 1739, no angst in sight.

Reunion and Rediscovery

Brianna sets three glasses
on the table, and waits for her parents.

“Roger told you we met Grandda Brian. I did my best to tell him you’re happy.”

“You couldna tell him the truth of you.”

“But I could tell him my father found the love of his life.”

“You chose the right thing, m’anssachd.”

As Mama reaches for him, he calls her a new nickname. Or an old one.

Life with her parents is always a translation exercise, and not just because her Gaelic is rusty. Tomorrow, she’ll ask Ian what “Sorcha” means.

She lifts her glass. “To home.”

I’m a lifelong trivia nerd and Outlander comes in surprisingly handy. Most recent: got a Final Jeopardy in J! Masters right because of Season 8. No overt spoilers just in case, since it just went on Hulu today, but it’s definitely the first time I’m glad I watched a Roger plot. 😂

Accounting for Taste III

Claire agrees with Eliot. Since Culloden, April is the cruelest month. May only brings more thoughts of graves she cannot visit, and names she cannot speak. May is for Faith and Jamie both.

In every season, Claire raises Brianna in a world Jamie never knew. But she is certain he would want their daughter as far from the hungry days of the Rising as possible. This spring, Frank teaches late on Tuesdays. She closes her eyes, imagines them at Carmi’s. They’ll order alarmingly large cheeseburgers. Bree’s hair will gleam red-gold as the daylight learns to linger. Smiling will be easier.

If anyone needs me I will be an emotional wreck from rewatching 6.8 and realizing that when Jamie says the part of the Act of Contrition about “God, who art all good, and deserving of all my love,” he moves his hand from Claire’s shoulder to run it through her hair. Because she is sacred, too. 🥹😭

I’ve been watching episode 1 a lot, and I can’t get over how much more romantic it is post finale. We meet Claire, our rare woman, and then we see how well she is loved now that we know exactly why Jamie’s ghost is there. It’s perfect narrative follow through and I gasp a little every time.

Ian pauses in the hall. Jamie is standing a few steps back from the parlor doorway. Even from here, Ian makes out Claire swearing in French. Brianna laughing.

Jamie knows the sound of his gait and makes room for him without a word.

Ian keeps his own voice a whisper as he says, “Isn’t this the second time she’s tried teachin’ Claire to clickit?”

“Third,” Jamie says.

“And you arena goin’ to go and help, because you like listenin’ better,” Ian says. Claire grumbles about how surgery is easier.

Jamie smiles. “It’s like music, but I can hear it fine.”

“Aye,” Jamie says, all posed casualness as he circles her. “You never pick a closet unless there’s a window.”

“Just because I’m hiding doesn’t mean I don’t want natural light.”

“And,” he interrupts, “You canna resist me so there’s always a proper door to bolt. And room for both of us.”

“Or you can’t resist me. I simply plan for the inevitable.”

Jamie pulls her hair free and steals her next breath with a searing kiss. This game is better.

“They never play chess together, Have you noticed?” Brianna looks sideways at Fergus. Partly, she’s testing his sense of humor—she can think of one obvious explanation for this, and she wasn’t even born in a brothel. He gives her a quicksilver grin, then sobers.

“Milord says that one plays chess in order to take a person’s measure. To learn what what they will sacrifice,” he says, turning his wooden hand.

“And they’ve always known that.”

“Excactement,” Fergus agrees softly. Brianna often calls him Jem’s uncle, and means it. In their shared glance, heavy with history, she finds her brother.

Updates from the S4 note-taking cave: I had forgotten Roger tries to tell Bree not to be mad he lied because he knows she regrets her last argument with Frank. So manipulative. Writing an AU so Claire can learn about that (and his earlier sex shaming) and lose her shit remains tempting.

Fergus greets his mother with kisses to both cheeks. “Thanks for watching him, Milady.” She smiles at the old nickname. “Dare I ask why you are in pajamas already?”

Germain runs by. “Grand-père made bread, and Grannie had flour handprints everywhere!”

“Your father is a menace.” Maman is trying not to blush, and failing. “A menace with a great deal of laundry to do.”

Papa sweeps in and clasps her hands in his. “I canna stay away. No’ even when she’s slanderin’ me.”

Fergus should definitely call his sisters later—Faith and Bree will both want to hear this story.

“The horse really likes apples?”

“I’ve yet to meet one that doesna,” Jamie assures wee Mandy. The lass beams when the mare takes her offering.

He turns and sees Claire, who has a basket tucked under her arm. Jamie thinks of Leoch, of the ways they drew close, only to part again.

“I’ve brought lunch for all three of us,” she says, and Jamie finds the same memories in her eyes.

This time, there is no Alec to scold him. This time, Claire cradles his face in her hands. She meets him in a laughing kiss. A promise to stay.

Lunch break rewatch thoughts: At the end of S1, Claire is wearing a green cloak when they leave for France. In S8, she wears a green jacket a lot, including at the creek before the finale love scene. When they say goodbye before the battle, her jacket is blue: the color of healing.
