I couldn't leave well enough alone, so I got busy with the detail markers. I painted the headlights, tail lights, turn signals, livense plates, backup lights, beacons, and chrome trim where necessary. Those painted details really made these cars look even better!

Some dish soap, a toothbrush, and a rinse later these cars look a lot better! They're scratched and worn, but mostly intact. The most important thing is that these toys are still good to be played with! However, I am not the one who'll play with them...

Welcome to "Sunday with Ender" where, today, I'm drowning toy cars!
A variety of toy cars submerged in my bathroom sink. All of these appear to be produced before the 1980s.

Maybe, in due time, this F7 will get sound. For now, I'm just happy I could turn this shelf queen into a useful powered locomotive and that I could bring it with me to AnthroCon.

Pardon the messy room. I just wanted to lay down some track, try out the 22" radius curves I bought earlier this year, and listen to the soothing sounds of metal wheels rolling on metal tracks.

Fudge it. I'm running trains today since I missed going to the club yesterday and I'll be at a convention this coming Saturday. Here's every X72-class boxcar I own pulled by a custom F7. The white-sprayed car is a personal art car that I'm still deciding on.

Furries, feathers, scalies and those with just skin, may I have your attention! I now have TWO of the HO scale slot car railroad crossings! If all goes well, then I'll put in the effort to bring a model train vs slot car setup to furry conventions next year!
Two rare HO scale railroad crossings for slot cars produced by Life-Like/Walthers in the mid to late 2000s. Both slot car pieces are connected to grey track adaptors to make the crossings compatible with Power-Loc style railroad tracks.

Details can make a difference: here are two basic and cheap "Spirit of '76" cabeese shells. However, through time, effort, and love, one caboose transformed into more detailed example that's on-par with the current standard plastic cabeese of today. You can do the same with regular art materials!
Two "Spirit of '76" cabeese, produced by Tyco in HO scale, on a display track. Both cars are marked "SLSF" for the St. Louis-San Francisco "Frisco" railroad. The left one is an unmodified earlier production run with metal ladders and basic metal handrails at its ends, along with minor fading/yellowing of its white plastic. The right one was modified by me and is a later run with more detailed plastic handrails and ladders, along with no signs of fading or yellowing.

The right one had its roof, trucks, and window trims painted silver, the roof grab rails painted red and blue, the side handrails and end handrail chains painted gold, the end handrail uprights painted white, the chassis painted matte white, and the wheel faces painted a rusty/dirty brown. The caboose on the right also has window glazing added by cutting up plastic packaging and gluing it behind the window openings with canopy glue.

The paints used were a Testors silver spray can (roof and truck), a Rust-Oleum matte white spray can (chassis/frame), Apple Barrel acrylic water-based paint markers in silver, brown, and blue (window trims, wheel faces, and roof grab rails, respectively), Gundam Markers in red and white (roof grab rails and end handrails, respectively), a Paint Marker "Liquid Gold" chrome paint pen (side handrails and end handrail chains), and a Rust-Oleum satin clear spray can to seal the colors afterwards. I also painted the inside of the caboose silver to give the interior some color, to hide the original red and blue paint that bleed through, and to prevent light from bleeding through the cheap plastic shell. A usual sign of good paint quality for plastic toys is not easily seeing light bleed through the plastic. Once the paint was done, Testors canopy glue was used to adhere the recycled clear packaging to the inside of the caboose to create window glazing.

The right caboose features upgraded metal wheels from Walthers and Kadee #148 metal whisker "standard" couplers with #212 Talg…

Today was a nice day for a birthday. It was chill, it wasn't overly stresfull, and I got to work on some model trains. Thanks to y'all for the birthday wishes! I absolutely appreciate them! <3
Five train cars I bought for myself. On top are two Conrail X72-class boxcars by Walthers. Below the boxcars are two covered hoppers, the brown Milwaukee, Racine and Troy is by Accurail and the orange one with dragon graffiti is by Roundhouse. In front is a Chicago Great Western flat car with two John Deere "Waterloo Boy" tractors, by Athearn.

During a NASCAR race, my ADHD kicks in at times and I notice cool things going on in the crowds. The most heartwarming thing I noticed was a young teenager trying to take photos with his camera of the race cars at full speed. 30 mins later he was receiving lessons from a professional photographer!

I've been sitting on these fancy brass "KarTrak" placards for years, and it was finally time to use them. My bicentennial Santa Fe SD45-2 #5704 is the first applicant. I'm very grateful someone recorded a close-up walkaround of the real thing so I could get the placard positions perfect! Stay tuned!
My Athearn Genesis HO scale EMD SD45-2 in Sante Fe bicentennial paint sits on my work desk with KarTrak placards from Tangent (left bag) and Rapido (right bag). I had both brands on-hand so I could determine which one had colors closer to the real ones used on recently restored ATSF 5704. The Tangent ones are printed on thin brass pieces. The Rapido ones are printed on plastic. IMO, the Tangent ones are crisper and more vibrant, but the Rapido ones were spares from a trio of covered hopper cars in my collection.

KarTrak was an early colored barcode system introduced in 1967 meant to automatically identify train cars as they passed by. It was abandoned in 1977 because keeping the placards clean enough to be identifiable was harder than anticipated due to many economic reasons and practical reasons.I'm pointing to a paused FaceBook video of someone walking around the real 5704 and pointing to the KarTrak placard on my model 5704. The KarTrak placard is positioned accurately on the model's handrails to match the real one.A close-up of my 5704's right side with the KarTrak glued to the handrail stanchion. To avoid damaging the model while I laid it on its side, I kept it contained in its plastic clamshell and left the foam stick behind the railing to avoid bending the uprights while I attached the placards. It's a lot easier to glue something when it's laying down than when it's standing up, as you're not fighting gravity. I applied a drop of superglue to the tip of a toothpick before lightly spreading it on the handrail upright and then placing the KarTrak placard with a small pair of pliers. My Santa Fe 5704 is now ready for this weekend, and it better replicates the real one with its new KarTrak placards. The boxcar shells in the background are part of another project.

It's disappointing to see a model train company use non-human generated art for their anniversary car. It could be possible they hired a human artist who had zero knowledge of how trains work, but I think they went cheap. There are enough human train artists out there they could've chose instead!
The 80th anniversary boxcar design for Kadee. The art on the right side of the car looks suspicious. The entire train looks worse the more you look at it.

The pilot wheels are connected together by a coupling rod and yet are also connected to the main driving wheel by another coupling rod??? Pilot truck wheels aren't normally connected together on steam engines and certain not connected to the driving wheel. The driving wheel is literally off of the rail.

The front wheels of the tender look like the pilot wheels of the locomotive but the rear wheels of the tender match the freight car behind it.

A fun part of doing model railroading is that IT'S YOUR WORLD AND YOU CHOOSE WHAT YOU WANT IN IT. Thus, Mauna is now canonical to my trains. C: The original STP stickers were unfortunately damaged when I removed the masking tape to paint the roof silver. I added numbers to the Porsche 917-30 too.

I can't leave "okay enough" alone when it came to this "Bobber" caboose from Bachmann. It received painted wheel faces, window glazing (the cupola ones were hard to get right), and I painted the marker lanterns brass with spots of red and green to simulate the lens. A neat addition to my collection!
