D&D has had rules for fear almost since the beginning. But if the rules make your character run away, does that scare YOU, or just take away your control? I look at that question, and the history of horror and madness in D&D, in my latest video. Watch it here: youtu.be/0dIc20Tskcw #DnD #TTRPG

D&D players weren’t ALWAYS stereotyped as nerds. Some early media coverage focused on how intelligent they seemed to be. Then the story changed. My new video looks at how we got from there to the D&D “nerd.” 🎲🐉 Watch the full documentary here: youtu.be/a6HrRSpbK6k #DnD #TTRPG

D&D players were arguing with TSR over who got to define their game 40 years ago. One player threatened to stop buying AD&D. Another said, “If you can't use it, don't buy it.” But another response got to the heart of it: “my campaign.” Watch my latest video here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv8o...

By the early 1980s, D&D was in toy stores, mall bookstores and even the Sears catalog! But TSR had to change more than its distribution to get there. My new video looks at how D&D became mainstream. #DnD Watch the full deep-dive here: youtu.be/ZUsceYZsHLo

If you played D&D around 1980, were Basic D&D and AD&D really two separate games? TSR's answer changed over time. That made me think about what players were actually doing at their own tables. My full video is now live: youtu.be/f30hIRvPqoI

If you played D&D in the ’70s or ’80s, I need your help with some research! What version did you say you were playing, and what rules were you actually using? Did you mix OD&D, Basic and AD&D rules/material? What year was this? Tell me what you remember!

What would D&D look like without Tolkien? One clue comes from Poul Anderson in 1953, before The Lord of the Rings was published. I explore that and a lot more in my new D&D History documentary, now live on Daddy Rolled A 1. Watch the full deep-dive here: youtu.be/FCYtHjEXcpk

Gamers usually associate D&D character builds with feats, multiclassing, and 3E. But by 1985, players could already make advancement choices based on what they wanted their characters to become later. So when did character builds actually begin? Check out my latest deep-dive: youtu.be/Yxs0zbYtHLs

Third Edition was once the new D&D. Now it’s 26 years old, and some players who embraced it later came to see 3.5 as the last version that still felt like D&D. So what actually makes D&D “old school”? My newest video: youtu.be/zgwb8m5V8L0 #DnD #OSR

When many people talk about early D&D, they often talk about how deadly it was. What interests me more is what happened 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 a character died. If death was so common, how and why did campaigns keep going? 🎥 youtu.be/GJJGh_ynb58 #DnD #OSR #TTRPG

The Beholder wasn't adapted from mythology or fantasy fiction. It was created by a 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙧 trying to challenge powerful D&D characters who had become very good at surviving everything else. That idea became one of D&D's most feared monsters. 🎥Watch the full deep-dive here: youtu.be/OR0TRnZgbx4

This week’s video is about my feeling that AD&D started start feeling really different in the mid-1980s. Unearthed Arcana, Oriental Adventures, and the Survival Guides did more than just add more material. They also changed what characters and rules were expected to do. youtu.be/AYUW0E8kBzo #ttrpg

My new video is now live! This one is on the Druid in early D&D, and the more I worked on it, the more it felt like the class is a bit strange, and not just because of its abilities. And, that was yet another piece in the puzzle of how early D&D really worked. Watch now: youtu.be/0y95DI-XEsA

I’ve been looking at how balance works in early D&D, and it doesn’t really match the modern idea of fairness. Uneven XP tables. Fragile low-level characters. No encounter balancing. And yet, it works. So what is the game actually balancing? Check out the full deep-dive here: youtu.be/k3xCKeei-iA

Most people run AD&D combat the same way: roll initiative, attack, move on. And that works. But the books include all these other rules that only show up in certain moments: weapon speed, armor adjustments, segments. They’re not optional… so why are they there? Find out now! youtu.be/Amt06YbR7nE
