As Kaveh Zahedi puts it, “it’s so much about anticipatory action, so much about early warning”. The same measures that help farmers prepare for El Niño and other climate shocks are also those needed to build more resilient agrifood systems in a changing climate.
010
Lionel Dabbadie @dabbadie.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
This means helping farmers decide what and when to plant, how to manage water and fodder, and which drought- and heat-tolerant seeds and breeds to use. It also means investing in practical measures that save water and maintain soil moisture.
100
Lionel Dabbadie @dabbadie.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
🌱 The priority is to act early. “First and foremost is early warning. Our farmers have to know what’s around the corner to help them with their planning.”
100
Lionel Dabbadie @dabbadie.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
⚠️ The most vulnerable countries and communities will face the greatest risks. These are “the same places that already are suffering from hunger and malnutrition”, particularly where there is “a convergence of crises”, including conflict, climate change and water scarcity.
100
Lionel Dabbadie @dabbadie.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
📉 “For every one degree increase in average global temperatures, there’s going to be around a 7% decrease in yields for these four major crops.” These are global averages, and “single events can have much, much bigger impacts.”
100
Lionel Dabbadie @dabbadie.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
🌾 The first concern is staple crops. “First and foremost, we see an impact on the staple crops that feed the world”, including maize, rice, soy and wheat.
100
Lionel Dabbadie @dabbadie.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
🌡️ “The combined impact of the droughts and the extreme heat that we’re seeing is becoming essentially a serious threat to food security.”
100
Lionel Dabbadie @dabbadie.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
The message: climate extremes are already affecting staple food production. El Niño can amplify these & the greatest impacts will be felt in places already affected by hunger, conflict, water scarcity & other vulnerabilities. Early warning & anticipatory action are essential.
