It makes me wonder about Eastern Ukraine and the devastation I saw there and of course to Gaza. How long to rebuild these towns and cities? We really are an insane species.

Mostar was absolutely wrecked when i was there and to this day many buildings still bear the scars of war.

Last week I was driving from.Satajevo to Split for the first tine in 30 years. Gave me the chance to visit Mostar and it's famous ottoman bridge as last time I was there it had been blown up by Bosnian Croats and a rope bridge erected in its place!

In a week where we remember those who died fighting evil 80 years ago, let us also remember those who continue to do so.

Not my best fighting but came away with more experience and a bronze medal in the British Karate Championships (Super Veterans)! If you’d asked me when I came back to karate 18 months ago that that would be possible I’d have laughed! Next step, Brown/White belt….

But I also want to remember Scottish Aid Worker Neil Golightly heraldscotland.com/news/12091587.… Neil died on Igman, on that same hellish road trying to bring help to others. If only he knew how much that meant to the beseiged Bosnians below.

David Hamilton 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇦 @da.vidh.scot · 05/04/2025

But we were lucky. We got to go home after delivering the aid. But for the people of Saravejo, that wasn't an option instead they endured the snipers, the shelling (300 shells a day) not to forget the bitter Bosnian winters

One of the most extraordinary experiences was returning to the tunnel on 2014- it's now a museum- and walking the same route our boxes took

It was a dangerous drive though and We were shot at by anti aircraft guns, and mortared. In April 95 we were lucky to only lose a truck. This photo shows the Smouldering wreck of one of our convoy trucks

David Hamilton 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇦 @da.vidh.scot · 05/04/2025

Bosnian resilience was incredible though. They tunnelled under the UN controlled airport and manged to establish an aid route into the city. This allowed agencies like Edinburgh Direct Aid to take aid over Mt Igman to the entrance and the aid to be taken through the tunnel.

On this day in 1992, the Siege of Sarajevo began. The longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. It lasted 3 years, 10 months, 3 weeks & 3 days (5 Apr 1992 to 29 Feb 1996)

Aid trucks outside burnt out National Library in Saravejo

I’m delighted to have joined the Scottish Parliaments Cross Party Group on Ukraine. The meeting last night focused on Culture but reports also covered health and wellbeing, business, education and communities. All demonstrating typical Ukrainian enthusiasm and energy. A few actions to follow up on…

But more recently many of my neighbours have also told me how much it impacts them. Driving past it every day reminds them of the luxury of their security, it reminds them of the plight of Ukrainians and it sparks thoughts and conversations..... 2/3

🧵 I have been flying a Ukrainian flag outside my house constantly for 3 years. At first lots of people did, but over time numbers have reduced. I know how much it means to Ukrainians- pulling a photo of it out in Kyiv, Kharkiv or even Donbas usually brings tears to eyes!... 1/3

Worth mentioning that Ukraine has developed and implemented the ProZorro anticorruption platform that is internationally recognised as world leading. Give recent behaviours its clear USA could benefit from procuring that. #ogp en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prozorro

Poignantly, for me, Przemysl was the main crossing point for Ukrainian refugees coming to Europe 3 years ago. It's a town I know well as I still transit there. I had no idea of its history.
