Great thoughts on a very bleak job market. For myself, the professional network has paid dividends time and time again. You could have all the skills/experience in the world but if no one knows it because you're not out there, you're going to get overlooked by default. TL;DR - make friends!

Find one of the local places that does office liquidations and buy a Herman Miller or Steelcase for a fraction of the price. I bought a Steelcase Leap a few years back for $60 that was still in fantastic condition.
