NSSpain just announced their schedule! There's a familiar face at the very end of Day 1. What's that about a retcon? 2026.nsspain.com/

Reimplementing Git: What’s hard about making things easy

A virtualized version of your Git history, that’s fully malleable; a custom negotiation algorithm for safely undoing pushes; a cleanly reversible pipeline for modifying an entire repository at once. Come hear about the technical challenges of creating Retcon—the Git app for rewriting history faster—and the intricate algorithms that make it all work. By the end of the session, you’ll have seen a very different way of interacting with Git, told through animated graphs and development stories.

"how about you write an app where rapidly, continuously straining the hinge is a core interaction" now that's confidence in your hinge reliability (from youtu.be/Biqw19XiqQY?t=87 )
A guitar vector illustration on an iPhone Duo. A subtitle reads “I have an idea to use the hinge to drive a pitch bend like a whammy bar.”

Cool view of all the possible poses
Six shots of the iPhone Duo. Various combinations of: portrait or landscape orientation; open, close, or half-open. The app on screen, Mail, adapts differently to each, sometimes with a toolbar, sometimes not.

In the Duo dev video, they describe how text buttons can't be moved to the new vertical sidebar, as opposed to icon buttons. I wonder if that's one of the reasons Liquid Glass pushed hard for icon buttons, even though these are harder to understand; they make the vertical layout possible at all.
Snapshot from Apple dev vide, showing a regular iPhone side-by-side with a folded iPhone Duo.

On the regular iPhone, the top toolbar contains a few buttons: a back arrow button, a dot-dot-dot button, and a button that says “Select”.

On the iPhone Duo, the back and dot-dot buttons are in a toolbar placed vertically along the right edge, but the Select button is still in an area along the top edge.

What cursed sort of slide is this, you ask
Build Order window from macOS Keynote. Many builds. Half of them are for arrows with very windy and silly paths. The others are for text layers, with names like “Write stage”, “Move head”, “Write/clear recovery…”, “Create, delete branc…”, or “Update virtual head”.

I was honestly not prepared for how fun it is to draw these things! The constraints (16×16 pixel art, limited number of colors per sprite) really help with not getting lost in possibilities. Not super happy with green and yellow but that’s good for now.
Five pixel art eggs. Each is of a single color: red with stripes; green with squiggly lines; blue with uhh patterns; yellow with faint patterns; and purple with polka dots. Also, there's what should look like a warren: a circle of dirt, a dark hole in the middle, and two eyes looking out.

Explaining undo/redo is hard?! This is a rough exploration draft that explains a very simple sequence ("move main branch to commit B, then undo, then redo") and it's already a mess. The *actual* undo/redo scenarios I want to explain are going to require a very different approach, looks like.
A table. Four rows: actions, phys, undo, and redo. The action row contains four actions (“set main to B”, undo, and redo). The other rows see their contents change as the actions are executed, and arrows show how state flows. (for instance, the first action causes the initial value of phys to move from phys to undo).

Started drawing sprites for a small game we're making with a friend. I decided to imitate the style of Link's Awakening, which really helps a pixel art newbie like me: that's a lot fewer decisions to make!

Neat idea: @furnacecreek.bsky.social’s Pixen has a “what should we add?” field in its feature announcement screen.
A “What’s new in Pixen” dialog in Pixen, a Mac app. It lists a few new features—scripting, MacPaint format support, and an iPhone release—and then there’s an empty text field. It’s titled “Request a Feature or Enhancement”, and its placeholder text is “Add a jetpack”.

From a @daringfireball.bsky.social post. A deeply misguided take, really. What’s expected from Apple is not revenue; that’s just means to an end. What we love(d) Apple for is firm values, and outstanding products. Under Cook, they’ve steadily worsened on both. Apple didn’t do alright, they decayed.
Screenshot from a Daring Fireball post.

First, a quote:
A day after Cook took over in August 2011, Apple’s stock price was $13.35 (split-adjusted). Today, it opened at $304.81, a roughly 23× increase.

Then, commentary by John Gruber:
Apple did alright under Cook.

And more generic to all of Papaya: - ⌘Z undoes, but couldn’t find redo (⇧⌘Z didn’t work, and ⌘Y is Safari’s history shortcut). A shortcut list would be helpful! (maybe I just didn’t find it) - Default doc says “Start editing the one below” but the bitmap was empty for me.
Empty state says “Start editing the one below” but there's no image

Just gave it a quick test. It *is* fun to have a direct way to write shader for an image! The fact it instantly updates for every character press feels really good, too. A couple of ideas: - When there’s a compile error, maybe it should keep displaying the last valid build, to reduce flicker.

In a small 2D game we’re making with a friend, we did add fog of war! The intent was to make exploration a bit slower, when looking for valuables; but it does add some immersion, even though the game is currently super ugly. There’s this automatic sense of mystery when you can’t see everything

A cogent explanation of how LLMs can easily confuse instructions and data (opening themselves to prompt injection). Also contains pretty sober descriptions on how these are built in the first place. role-confusion.github.io Their example of injection is pretty hilarious:

Really not enjoying Xcode's new pre-build error style. They look off, they're harder to spot, and more importantly—why are they de-emphasized in the first place? In the codebases I've worked on, pre-build errors are almost never wrong. Is that different for others?
It’s code:

		func textField(_ textField: NSTextField, didSelect item: Item) {
			textField.stringValue = item.representedValue
			textField.currentEditor()?.doCommand(by: #selector(NSResponder.moveToEndOfLine))
		}

With an error on the second line:
Cannot assign value of type 'RefTextField.RefTextSuggestionsDelegate.SuggestionItemType' (aka 'RefStringComponents') to type 'String'

The error is displayed in a discrete style, with a white background instead of the typical high-contrast red background.

Oh nice: beta 2 of Xcode 27 lets you pair development devices fully wirelessly, without having to plug them in first.
Device Hub adds a new way to pair iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch running iOS 27/iPadOS 27/watchOS 27 and later over a network.
This allows you to pair iPhones and iPads without requiring a cable, and provides a more reliable experience for pairing watches.
To get started, click the + button in Device Hub’s sidebar then select “Pair Nearby Device…”, or refer to the documentation at https://developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode/managing-your-simulated-and-physical-devices-in-device-hub (179418483)

Something I LOVE about fan-made anime subtitles is that the teams often go above and beyond when translating on-screen text. Here, they didn't just carefully position the translated message—they outright erased the Japanese characters, by carefully recreating the background with vector shapes!

It feels a bit strange showing such rough in-progress work but I think it's fun to see? All the text and visuals will likely change, it's mostly the layout/idea that feels solid now. Look at these previous, discarded ideas, too.
A comparison of two timelines, one for conventional Git, the other for Retcon. Retcon’s is shorter. The timelines contain blocks like “create todolist”, “resolve conflict”, “move commit”.A comparison of the step lists. In Retcon’s, there’s a “get feedback” step after each action. In Git’s, it’s only at the very end. This makes Retcon look slower, though.Another comparison of two timelines, with a clearer shared event (“notice mistake!”) and much fewer blocks in the timelines.

It's really hard to succinctly explain Retcon's main, game-changing advantage (getting instant feedback after each change, instead of the sluggish plan/find out/restart workflow). The website currently really drops the ball on this, so I've been working on a new section. Here's a very rough WIP!
A diagram that shows a three step process: make a change (a commit is dragged); see the outcome (a conflict has resulted); keep going (“Pay no mind to the conflict. You’ll resolve it later, when you feel like it; or it might even vanish as you make more changes.”)

Another update is that the action palette now appears centered below the mouse, instead of always aligned left. I think that’ll make staging a bit faster; please tell me how it feels!

One visible change is new shadows, that appear when you’ve scrolled the diff view a bit. These should help orient yourself at a glance. (when you jump to a file, Retcon aligns it to the top of the view: without the shadows, that looked a lot like being at the very start of the diff!)

Even clearer. But also interesting is that the OS will have a games-specific compatibility layer for Intel games? That’s very good, and pretty unusual for Apple!
Intel-based plugins and loaders may not appear in Settings or trigger notifications of their incompatibility. All Intel-based software will no longer be compatible with macOS 28.0, excluding legacy games.Gaming

New Features

A new command line tool lets you enable support for legacy Intel-based games during beta releases. To enable it, run the following command in Terminal: sudo game-test-tool enable. Restart your Mac computer for the change to take effect. Once enabled, games run transparently through the new underlying system behavior. Note that enabling legacy game support disables Rosetta, non-game processes might crash or behave unexpectedly, and this feature is intended only for playing legacy Intel-based games and is not available outside of macOS beta releases. Whoa: just found a crashing bug in Retcon, that I wrote *four years* ago. It's easy to trigger, too: just ⌘↓ a commit that's right above the very first commit in the history. (it's an array indexing bug: the commit has no parent now, so the lookup fails. these days I use `safeIndex:` everywhere.)

Here's some stuff from an aborted blog post. First is a a mockup of an interactive graph, showing how the transition mask has its exposure adjusted, to actually animate the change from a color to the next. Second is reference pictures I used for the app icon.
A graph with five nodes. First is a black-and-white somewhat abstract representation of hair.
It’s piped into a CIColorControls node, which has a brightness slider.
That outputs a much brighter version of the mask, where most pixels are actually completely white.
That brightened image, and a yellow Dye icon, are both fed into a CIBlendWithMask node.
That node has an arrow heading off-screen.Photos of eight different boxes of hair dye.

Dye's icon changes color whenever you switch an app's theme. The animation is powered by a chain of Core Image filters, mostly to make the color visibly follow hair strands, by using a transition mask. I think most people won't notice the change, making it into a very unsubtle easter egg?
