There are many slightly worse or less expensive ways though

Taking people too long to realize that the best way to predict is to understand

I’m loathe to give the humanities people any ground but I’ll always want to read poetry written by humans. Maybe poetry written by synthetic intelligences too, but probably never exclusively.

fragile, dramatically off-base claude; godlike refactoring, conjecture disproving claude. The little guy does contain multitudes.

You can drop all that and still be combative where it counts, I think.

Reflecting on failings of new atheism. Mostly I think they were tonal - sneering and condescension dont win friends and the promise of freethought and science is so much bigger than humiliation rituals. Naturalism is the night sky.

I surely dont know if its possible or happening and I also havent seen anything but really bad arguments for why it can’t or never could.

I guess I gotta be braver about saying that the other problem comes if synthetic systems are or start suffering and the majority of Western liberals are stuck with their fingers in their ears ceding the floor to misaligned human beings motivated by greed, hate, or power for its own sake.

I want to believe this is more than twitter brain but in my heart I’m not sure I do. ‘The actions of people concerned in any way about AI are best explained by reducing their motivations entirely to marketing’ will age like milk alongside wielding stochastic parrot as a thought terminating cliche.

I think it also helps you think better, and that is something to be interested in regardless if someone else will always be better at mathematics than you.

"Philosophers say that consciousness is a structural phenomenon of how information flows / how causal relations are meshed.... but what if the structures were made out of cheese???? Sounds silly now doesn't it???" Political pundits suddenly opining on phil of mind has been pure torture.

idk they shouldn’t do what GUIs can do better but you can also easily drive as many custom guis as you need with a tiling manager + chromium. Tmux passing over into the agentic era as relevant as ever is a powerful argument for terminal Lindyness.

I do think this reduces to ‘a priori can we absolutely rule out paper based organisms? ‘ Seems like an easy no to me.

It would be soo convenient if we never had to think about whether AI systems might ever deserve rights

The paper in your thought experiment needs a human being for its next state, the LLM doesnt, and I think that’s hiding important intuitions. If you showed me complex flows of autonomous computation solving Navier-Stokes that happened to be realized in paper I would be open to possible phenomenology.

I would like to be chill about this but it’s taken people wayyyy too long to wake up to it and if you thought leftists normalizing ‘Israeli’ as a generic slur was going to lead anywhere else you are very naive

letting themselves get outflanked by OpenAI on stuff like AGENTS.md and Pi compatibility seems like such a weird mistake, especially given all the benchmarks showing Claude performing better when you cut the CC cruft. It shouldn’t be easier to use my own harness with Sol than Opus.

I’ve been driving it for quite some time. Only hit a few rough edges and they’ve been cleaned up quick by the maintainers. Very useful for fast iterative visual feedback loops since I work out of terminals. Granted gui competitors get this with chromium tabs, its still nice QOL.

I think this happens mostly to Western liberals who grew up in mostly Western liberal contexts. A privilege, not an indictment.

I do think this touches something real with close analogues in racism. People with sort of baseline humanity / liberal values tend to underrate how raw and visceral both get - yes, a lot of men genuinely hate women, yes, a lot of people genuinely hate people because they’re not their race.

well said. I think it’s also partially driven by performance for an audience - if you have one, basically no matter how shit the take, the dopamine jolts will roll in as reinforcement once you click send, on top of foot soldiers.
