Pleased to share that our paper has been published in Child Dev. When caregivers use more iconic speech, infants are more engaged. Iconic caregiver speech is also associated with heightened IDS but effects on infant engagement remain after controlling for this. academic.oup.com/chidev/artic...

Caregivers' use of iconic words is associated with high positive engagement by both caregivers and infants
Abstract. Iconic words are more frequent in infant-directed speech, but it is not known why. We examine whether caregivers use iconic words to engage infan

Our paper tinyurl.com/3duukb2w shows that iconicity in adults' speech may facilitate infant language development through heightened interactional engagement. When parents use highly iconic words, infants are more engaged with the interaction and the parental speech is more strongly infant-directed.

New #OA corpus doi.org/10.5281/zeno... by Mingtong Li, Jiahao Eric Yang, @suzanneaussems.bsky.social. In short: 60 adults (30 pairs) play an interactive word guessing game. What is special: The clue giver is in situations under postural (in)stability (standing on the ground or on a wobble board)!!

Considering the whole body, including #postural stability affects acoustics of #speech, but not #fluency related measures, see new work in JASA. Thanks for this team effort with Mingtong, Eric & @suzanneaussems.bsky.social. The corpus is #OA on doi.org/10.5281/zeno... pubs.aip.org/asa/jasa/art...

Perturbing postural stability affects acoustic properties but not fluency of adult speech production during face-to-face interaction
Physical constraints, particularly those that challenge postural stability and control, may measurably influence speech production. This experimental study inve

Excited to share our new paper in Child Dev! 🎉 We taught children names for 'monster' toys. Some names matched the sounds they made, some didn't. Children, especially 3-yr-olds, learned matching names more easily. Iconic words support word learning. Read here: track.smtpsendmail.com/9032119/c?p=...

Young children benefit from iconicity when learning novel onomatopoeia
Abstract. Iconic words, especially animal onomatopoeia, are more prevalent in infant- than adult-directed speech, possibly because iconicity bootstraps wor

At last week's @primatesocietygb.bsky.social conference it was discussed at length how we need to be supporting the local communities and helping where we can and only a few days later @dranipermana.bsky.social is trying to do just that! Please share or get in touch with her to see how you can help.

Big thanks to the amazing organizers! So happy I got to share my PhD research on how children and adults use iconic gesture speed to figure out verb referents. Spoilers: 3-year-olds picked up only on the fast gestures, but not the slow ones, unlike adults 👋 #LLGAwayDay

Thrilled to see my first publication out in PB&R with @sotarokita.bsky.social and @suzanneaussems.bsky.social! Adults interpret novel verbs using iconic speed cues in speech prosody and hand gesture, with a small but reliable link across modalities. Open access: link.springer.com/10.3758/s134...

Adults interpret iconicity in speech and gesture via the same modality-independent process - Psychonomic Bulletin & Review
Iconicity is the resemblance or similarity between the form of a signal and its meaning. In two studies, we investigated whether adults interpret iconicity in speech and gesture via a modality-indepen...
