A bit of a frantic jam in the end, but I enjoyed it and the final game. Honestly, I think I got more sleep than last year's jam. The others might not say the same though. Thank you for reading! Be sure to play and rate Murder Most Fowl on itch: itch.io/jam/gmtk-jam...

All character textures were finalized within the last hour of the jam. We were certainly cutting it close 👀. I made many builds to test and verify things on the itch website. Turns out Unity was using the PC quality settings but itch used the lower web settings. Ohno

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
The first character texturing was completed nearly 3 hours before the deadline. I used this time to improve melee hitboxes. Original version used particles and was not very accurate. New one uses actual box colliders. I also added hit shake to the character and enemies.

While I waited for model textures and animations, it was time to playtest. The initial balancing was way too easy. All enemies were one hit. I easily reached 10 rounds by never sacrificing weapon damage. Time to up all enemy health and damage. Yeah, now it is difficult.

With 12 hours left in the jam, I created the itch page and uploaded a test build. With not much programming work left on me, I started filling in for other areas I wouldn't normally, like finding different background music. The menu click ended up being bird wing flapping sounds.

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
With most of the game playable, I started adding details to the different scenes. Check out my programmer art which I hoped the artists would eventually replace 🙃

The player character model was ready for implementation mid way through the last day. Every sacrifice had a unique mesh on the character. Selecting a sacrifice would disable that mesh to change the character while playing

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
On the third day, enemy spawning was added in. There are set spawn areas in the arena. Each enemy had a cost to spawn and the arena had a total budget. Each enemy also had a max count. The list was shuffled and the first set within budget were spawned in at random locations.

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
After 48 hours the basic game loop was ready. Main menu to gameplay to sacrifice selection to game over. I hadn't worked on enemy spawning yet. Enemies were slowly being modeled, but not yet rigged or textured. The arena had was also designed and modeled.

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
One npc design required to stay in line of sight of the player. I hadn't done that before and had to research how. The solution I came up with was interesting. Find the nav mesh path to the player and use the last two path points to create a ray which is always within player view
110
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
The first enemy implemented was the ostrich/emu smasher. All the NPCs ended up relatively simple. They each use 4 state state-machine: Idle, Move, Telegraph, and Attack. The only real difference between the NPCs was their move logic. So much copy pasted code. Only for a jam

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Player stats were stored in a single scriptable object. Each sacrifice had its own scriptable object with stats it modified. The sacrifice screen randomly picked from the remaining sacrifice item. Selecting a sacrifice just added its values to the player stats.

Day 2 was when we finally decided on the theme of birds and gangsters. @fionna.bsky.social and @lakuza.bsky.social can go more into detail on their thought process 👀
110
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
On day 2 I started working on the player stats and controller. It progressed relatively quickly. I took some code from previous GMTK jams rather than writing it completely from scratch. Since I needed a character model, I also reused the character from my first jam entry.

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
@lakuza.bsky.social quickly came up with 8 different enemy mechanics and even a boss idea. He said it was a suggestion, but I saw it and thought "Time to make all of these". Little did we know that we should not have tried to consider 8 enemies for a short jam. The boss idea was forgotten

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
The first day of the jam is for brainstorming and design planning only. We came up with many ideas, but the one idea that stood out right away was "Reverse Roguelike". None of the other ideas were as compelling. Excited for the idea, we then started designing a game around this.

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Four people worked on the jam: I was the programmer, secondary game designer, and project manager @fionna.bsky.social was the lead artist and character designer @lakuza.bsky.social was the lead game designer, character animator, and secondary artist @legendsvr.bsky.social last minute sfx

Participated in #GMTKJam again! The theme was "Count Down". We made a reverse roguelike where you start out powerful and sacrifice abilities and clothing as you play. I am proud of what our team created. 🧵 for my work in the jam. Play for free on itch itch.io/jam/gmtk-jam...

I went on an indefinite break from VRChat world creation back in May, with the intention to explore other platforms/options. I won't be returning to VRC as a world creator anymore, the break from it is now permanent. So what did I choose? Standalone games for platforms like... (see image for more)

I have released a patch to keep CyanTrigger running for now, because I care about the creators who use it. But long-term, the platform needs to invest in stable, documented, and supported tools. That is not something a solo community dev can patch forever.
1308
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/05/2025
If CyanTrigger has been important to your workflow, I strongly encourage you to give feedback directly to VRChat. Ask for clarity, for support, and for proper investment in the tools creators rely on. It shouldn’t fall on unpaid community developers to keep critical tools working

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/05/2025
I was contacted again over the weekend suggesting talks after the holiday. I was forced to wait again. I thought we had actually started a path to professional discussion. That did not go anywhere either. VRChat is not interested in long-term solutions.

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/05/2025
After a week of no response, VRChat then released the breaking update on a Friday before a long weekend, without notice to me, or to the creator community. As you can imagine, creators, including myself, were upset.
190
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/05/2025
One option was to officially tell creators to stop using CyanTrigger. I wanted them to stop promoting my content without asking. I hoped that VRChat could pay me to continue to support, but I also gave an option that did not involve money. I expected to be told of their decision.
190
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/05/2025
I was informed of the bug by VRChat in which they offered a "fix" that violated my license. My hands were tied until these talks were resolved. I rejected their proposal and provided multiple proposals of my own. I assumed that VRChat would be willing to work with me on this.
1110
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 28/05/2025
CyanTrigger v4.4.4 Bug Fix I have always intended to make this fix. I said before that I would keep CyanTrigger maintained for Udon 1. CyanTrigger was designed to be fairly future-proofed based on the architecture of Udon. VRChat introduced an api change that broke CyanTrigger.

latest patch notes from VRChat, looks like cyantrigger won't be supported going forward which cuts off a lot of world creators like myself🫡

I have avoided publicly voicing my frustrations for this platform over the years, but this is an exception.

CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
I publicly announced I would stop supporting CyanTrigger over 6 months ago. VRChat could have contacted me then. Or at any time within the past 4 years since CyanTrigger's release. They did not do so with intention to help me or the project.
1160
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
Yes, someone from VRChat contacted me about CyanTrigger. It was one out of touch message without discussion. It felt very unprofessional. Rights to my work are not free. The public announcement was how I found the answer to the questions I asked them.
1121
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
I will not consider open sourcing CyanTrigger. I do not recommend anyone trying to start an open source alternative to CyanTrigger either. This is a platform problem, not something the community should be trying to solve.
1131
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
While I could consider a bug fix, this will only happen again in another sdk update. What incentive do I have to continue support vrchat as a platform? People upset with me should look to vrchat for not releasing an alternative. Udon has been available for 5 years.
1130
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
CyanTrigger should not have been a community solution. I stopped working on vrc tools due to lack of support back to me. No money for one. Also no one else helped answer questions. It was exhausting. If you care about a tool, you should find ways to give back, even without money.
1162
CyanLaser @cyanlaser.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
The new VRChat sdk is not compatible with CyanTrigger. If this affects you, voice your concerns to @vrchat.com and include specifics on why the official tools do not provide what you need. Do not rely on unofficial tools. Community members shouldn't be responsible for creators.

ZFighter is finally out! This took longer than expected. It all started after asking if a tool like this already existed. It did not, so I decided to make it! My contribution to the greater #Unity Community. Now to work on games again instead of starting on another editor tool 👀

Highly recommend this to anyone doing any kind of game dev in #unity , I used this on Bullet TIme Agent and I was confident there wouldn't be any z-fighting in there but I ended up finding quite a few (some I couldn't believe I misssed that were bigger than the player XD).
