So I don't block people often, but today I made the mistake of sharing someone's post about Zitkála-Šá and linking to my site's bio for her for more information.
The original poster first had a go at me for "whitewashing" because the text of the bio said she was "recruited" to a residential school (& then details the trauma she experienced there, & that this was part of a larger pattern to destroy Indigenous cultures she apparently ignored this entirely).
Being autistic and therefore a pedant, I pushed back although many kids were forced to go (www.wthr.com/article/news...), according to her own autobiography, she wanted to go and her mother (reluctantly) consented.
In comments, I was called racist & accused by her & others of "speaking over & ignoring Indigenous women," (never mind that I'd shared her original post in the first place & am literally sharing an Indigenous woman's story), not "actually" supporting women & even blaming children for being raped?!?
I've talked/written before on the podcast and in my books about the difficulties historians have in telling marginalized stories, whether that's race, disability, queerness, etc. But one thing that gets lost is the mob that will attack you if they disagree with anything you say or how you say it.
I'm all for decolonizing language and being honest about history, and I always prioritize marginalized biographies in Infinite Women projects. Attacking the people who are trying to get the histories out there because they're not your idea of perfect is counter-productive.
