Vampirovibrio chlorellavorus (ATCC 29753). No one had bought it for years. The ATCC couldn't revive it when I ordered it so they were going to destroy it. I got the last vial. I spent a couple of years trying to grow it and single cell sort and sequence it. Nothing. We could even get a 16s sequence.

It was a personal conversation with the director of the program. Long story short, they were preparing for the possible rise of algae based biofuels (Chlorella, etc.) and had a program to counter that (infect biofuel reactors with algae pathogens). They were growing large rectors with Vampirovibrio.
