fingers in the frame for sure

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

it's hard to get an intuition of what the shots will look like, you'll be in a spot and think "ah, perfect!" and then it's nothing

a hollow in the side of a cliff, exposed bleached tree root on the left, a blown out sky in the center, scruffy shrubs on the right

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

the horizon 202 is a really compositionally miserable camera to work with, very very hard to get a good shot with such a wide field of view, plus the distortion of the swing lens makes most human structures look absurd, it's even just hard to hold correctly

uploaded a few pictures taken with my Horizon 202 panoramic camera on Portra 400 www.flickr.com/photos/cy384...

it's beyond me! I don't buy expired, I'd rather minimize the risk, considering the hassle and cost of going out to shoot, developing, scanning, editing, etc.

im addition to being a fun game, the original source is on github, it has a whole fixed point vector math implementation with some nice optimized 68020 assembly

still feels bad in a different way, but I guess "film is too expensive" is a timeless statement

110

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 10/09/2026

felt bad about letting some film expire because I haven't shot much the past few years, but it's selling on ebay for more than I originally paid

once companies like anbernic run out of handheld consoles to clone, we need to convince them there's a market for a reproduction sony peg-ux50

server with a GPS module to automatically update its DNS LOC record

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

looking up bad DNS record types to add to my domains for no reason, there's LOC for physical location, which includes signed altitude in case your server is underground or in geosynchronous orbit

on linux, wayland supports multiple cursors at the same time, so my laptop has one for each of the trackpad, pen, and touch screen, and it just parks the extras in the corner while not in use

yeah! probably my rarest computer based on how low the serial number is, in some ways very cool (fastest completely open computer) but in other ways very boring (just runs linux normally, no particularly interesting features but the cpu)

neat card, basically a PCIe 4.0 switch, USB controller, and SATA controller all on one card for cheap

000

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 23/08/2026

after years of compromising over the 2 PCIe slots on a my Raptor Blackbird, settled on a combo of a 100Gb ConnectX-4 and this AMD southbridge on a card (4x m.2 and 4x SATA) www.aliexpress.us/item/3256812...

interesting read, only ~25% of seeds were viable to start with, they did best with six months(!) of cold stratification and took three months to germinate after that

020

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

I would pay stupid money for some fresh seeds, importing them is a legal hassle even if I could find them for sale, very much my white whale plant

said in a dusty, corpselike wheeze while holding up an ubuntu 5.10 CD in a mummified claw: 2006 will be the year of linux on the desktop

000

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

enabling apt src repos can't be done from the ui that has been there for 20ish years, the icon schemes look different and I resent change, need to switch all the fonts and font hinting around, update my bios for good luck, the cpu frequency governor is sluggish, screen brightness broke/fixed itself

000

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

switch to the mozilla firefox apt repository instead of snap, disable apport, disable advertising motd updates, disable modemmananger, install the first dozen packages I remember I need, recompile the most recent dozen programs I manually built...

110

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

every time I update ubuntu it sucks (mostly my fault); fix the incorrect keybinding that does rfkill when I rotate my laptop, patch eog to change file sorting, build the gnome extension I need which got adopted/messed up by an ai user, install gnu coreutils which conflicts with build-essential(!)

110

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 03/08/2026

someone is dumping 1.6TB p5800x optane drives on ebay (still ~$900), high end flash drives have more or less caught up, but still somewhat tempting

010

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 29/07/2026

this particular device has a web interface, if you plug it into a search engine you'll see some online unfirewalled, yikes

020

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 29/07/2026

'what is embedded linux? a miserable little pile of shell scripts'

020

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 29/07/2026

poking at a device, can alt-f4 the ui and right click to get a terminal, there's a shell script it lets you run via passwordless sudo that literally does "chmod $1 $2"

120

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 27/07/2026

really wish there was some libgen style site for datasheets, manufacturers are so weirdly grudging about them (this is a realtek callout)

020

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

probably migrating to dynadot, porkbun seems a little too cozy with cloudflare for my tastes

010

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

the stupid thing about this is, for $3 or $4 in volume, you can also get a linux capable, single-chip CPU+RAM SIP from allwinner, and I'd kinda rather do uboot and kernel stuff instead of lwip or freertos or whatever

100

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

I've been absolutely cooking my brain for a week over "what's the cheapest thing that can do gigabit ethernet in a <9mm package", not sure this project will pan out, but you can get the CH32V307 going for like $4 in parts

100

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

buying an obscure mcu dev board from china with free shipping gives you lots of time to pre-regret the windows IDE with hackjob gcc/openocd

110

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 14/07/2026

entirely missed namecheap getting sold to private equity last year, yikes, who's left? porkbun? what a wretched industry

010

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 07/07/2026

great to hear from a happy user! while I'm at it, any particular features or improvements you're interested in? full color and file transfer are probably next

pristine 1977ish teletype model 43, would pair well with any PDP (or PiDP), but I know I'm never going to do anything with it, might list it on the vcfed forums or something

010

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 02/07/2026

a bit tempted to do vcfmw, but it seems like you need to table yourself if you want to sell anything? kinda want to move my vax and paper teletype

110

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

every time I complain about this it's because I'm cooking up my own terrible networking hardware, each idea more expensive and less marketable than the last

020

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

I might buy the previously mentioned novarq switch (which has two 10Gb ports) because I'm that kind of FOSS chump but seriously, for a little more I could buy a new mikrotik 400Gb(!) switch

010

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

open source/hardware networking is always a bit sad to me, choices are: * home wifi routers * limited supply of hackable EOL enterprise gear * expensive (4x competition) low/mid spec stuff made by true believers

110

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

oh hey, look, a switch using one of the Microchip devices with upstream switchdev support (meaning the switch chip is a PCIe device you configure like a normal NIC)

100

cy384 @cy384.bsky.social · 18/06/2026

yeah! the netatalk modernization has been super impressive, hopefully the kernel functionality can be pulled out into some adapter program or library it's not really a huge volume of code either (like 3.5k lines being removed?)
