Some transit news --> UTA says it's going fareless... for a few days at least. It's planning to upgrade its fare collection system this weekend, which will make it difficult to collect fares. So it won't collect any from Friday through Sunday. Here's more on what the system upgrades will do:

We have a packed house for the SLC Planning Commission, so there’s an overflow largely because of the expanding housing proposal. We’ve been told a recommendation decision won’t be made tonight because of a scheduling error. Meaning this will be 1 of 2 meetings about it

We'll find out tomorrow whether Utah's drought status has changed after a stormy end to August, which was very productive statewide. It also closed the book on meteorological summer. Utah's mountain SNOTEL sites averaged 5.7 in. this summer, 1.4 in. above normal #utwx

Some impressive totals across Salt Lake City today from a very active monsoonal pattern that seemed to target the city today. SLC's official site (the airport) got 0.49 inches. Its August normal is 0.58 inches. A site in the Avenues is reporting 1.55 inches 👀 #utwx

A really interesting thing happened in southern Utah. St. George region (left) got 3x normal rain but soil moisture levels remained very dry because of how poor the season was before July South-Central (right) saw record-high soil moisture levels for July from the storms

Carter Williams @cwilliams.ksl.com · 05/08/2026
BUT federal hydrologists also point out that the statewide data hides that some regions saw big precipitation spikes while others missed out. Case in point: the Uinta Basin still has very low moisture levels for August

The short answer is yes, but it's also complicated. Extreme heat events that happened in past decades are becoming more frequent (explaining these graphs) and stretching into other meteorological seasons. It's part of an entire Utah trend
