The sequel to my debut, The End of Time, is proving to be difficult. I came up with the idea of setting the story on an alien world that resembles HR Giger’s biomechanical artwork back in 2017 and trying to capture that alienness is challenging.

I think the slow realisation I had about book publishing is the marketing side. That has been challenging to do because you’re trying to breach through the countless books out there to find the right people who would be interested in reading your story.

I remember when I initially was going to publish my book through a hybrid. They were interested in it but took several months to get back to me. It was only when they tried to get me pay into their hybrid model and not the traditional one, considering they were offering both, that i turned it down.

I think one of the sad things about publishing in this environment is the countless books with obvious ai covers. A lot of time and money goes into trying to at least give your book a professional look but then it sits along side these low effort ai slop and they’re innumerable.

I will never understand the appeal to using Gen Ai for writing. The whole point in writing is to showcase how good you are at utilising language to evoke emotion and thought-provoking ideas. So having another tool do the thinking for you just showcases how untalented you are.

Pleased to announce that 'Venus Fly Trap', a science fiction novella I wrote together with @cwgoode.bsky.social will release on June 17th! To help you get a feel for the quality of the prose, here's one of the book's more dramatic moments, a short nightmare sequence ⬇️

There was nothing. No stars. No moon. No light. Maxine clung desperately to the broken door, the icy floods encircling her. The wave gushed violently over her numb body, hoisting her up in a powerful surge and plunging her into the trough like flotsam. She couldn’t hear her own cries over the roar of water, swivelling her head with her mouth agape like a hatchling fallen off its branch, blackness above, blackness below, her weak hands rending the surface in an attempt to resist the suck of the next crest; a mountain in motion, its foam head stark pale like a glacier as it raced towards her, took hold and heaved her into its watery fangs, ripping her off her float with implacable force, the splintered wood not slipping from her grasp but disappearing as she was pulled into the lightless abyss. Salt water pushed its way into her mouth, seeking ingress to the lungs. Blind and frozen insensate, she struggled hopelessly to reach the surface, realising with nameless horror that there was none.
She jolted up in a cold sweat, her heart pounding so fiercely her chest ached. As she gasped for breath, hand fingering in the murk for the switch, needing light, needing anything but darkness now, she noticed she wasn’t alone.
In the doorway loomed a man.
