But seriously it was brilliant too. We read Sean Silver’s terrific new essay on the commercial and imperial contexts of the pink pigment used to make Sterne’s marbled page. Highly recommend! online.ucpress.edu/representati...

I took my Tristram Shandy seminar to Wesleyan’s Book Arts Lab, where we learned how to marble. My very serious intellectual takeaway is: marbling is sooooooo fun!

Back to school! It’s time to register yourself for this year’s gathering of The English Institute, happening at Yale October 2-3. Look at this killer lineup, and the shared reading is from Nietzsche. Come on up!

Obvs a dif size institution but Wesleyan has a decent model of this—it’s run as a branch of a local independent bookstore. A few years back it moved from campus to Main St, to bring more local people in but also encourage students out of their little bubble. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com/default.asp

I would *love* to talk with you sometime about the Likeness! I sort of liked it, but I had trouble with the plausibility of the set up and it just kept getting in my way of immersion in that magical thing she does with groups (which she def does beautifully in that novel!)

Any ideas for great undergraduate-friendly scholarly readings to be paired with Midsummer Night’s Dream on an introduction to the major course? (So a course not terribly historicist in general bent…) Also welcome ideas for fun theory readings that can stand alone to get prospective majors excited?!

It’s one thing to read poems in our textbook and a completely different thing to encounter them as readers would have encountered them in 1639, 1717, or 1827. CPE students did sophisticated work exploring how the materiality of a poem’s text impacts its interpretation.
