The Rhode Island state Capitol in Providence was the former home of the “Gettysburg Gun”, Battery B, 4th RI Light Artillery. It has a cannon ball stuck in its muzzle with 2 lbs of black powder still in it from the Battle of Gettysburg. Now it’s at the nearby Varnum Armory

OTD in 1864, the extremely underrated Battle of Monocacy was fought in Frederick County, Maryland. Gnl. Lew Wallace slowed Gen. Early just long enough for Gnl. Grant to reinforce the capital which is why Monocacy is called “The Battle that Saved Washington.” It’s a great visit, too!
