Made a crucial error that cost me my season this Fall. Used sterile soil but tried to save on mulch by using leaves from my backyard, ultimately introducing hookworms, aphids, etc. AND their eggs too! Use sterile mulches only! #gardening #organic-gardening

I was awarded a partial scholarship to Floret Farm's Flower Farming Workshop that normally costs about $1,000 and runs 6 modules but unfortunately I cannot participate. Floret is such a beacon of educational wealth wanting to see others succeed. I will reapply when offered next year #gardening

Big gardening day today I planted the presrpouts of succession 1 of Ranunculus & Anemone. For seeds, succession 1 direct sow of Night-Scented Stock, Clarkia & Blue Cornflower. Last, I soaked and laid in trays of vermiculite the 2nd succession of Ranunculus &Anemone. #gardening #organic-gardening

Starting to soak succession 2 for 4 hours, changing water ea hour, then set up pre sprout in 75° outdoors with little spraying to maximize root growth, minimize rotted, & get sprouts growing. Mixture of vermiculite and potting soil will be used. #gardening #organic-gardening #Ranunculus

When checking corm viability after storage, all gladiolus methods, which vary based on size, all begin with total removal of paper protection. Hot yellow corms meat told me under no uncertain doubts do I have Fusarium. An educational lesson. #gladiolus #organic-gardening #gardening #fusarium

Today I learned the grow bags 3 weeks from tuber planting without sprouts yet have all rotted & remained soaking wet. I found 1 sprouts in 1 of the bags, but daily downpours that form puddles which act as moisture wicks for the grow bags has caused me to isolate the #gardening #organic-gardening

Now with the vermiculite the consistency of a wet sponge rung out, both the larger bowl and square dish have Anemone corms and Ranunculus aviv and Tecolote Ranunculus corms pressed gently into it and covered with another 1.5" of vermiculite sprayed moist and lightly covered for humidity. #gardening

at right, the 2 glass preserves are placed in the fridge at 45° and kept in dark, with their plastic see thru lids lightly affixed to create humidity but not be airtight thus preventing the exchange of gases

After 4.5 hours, the Anemone corm went from shriveled raisinette to looking like a spinning top. The Tecolote Ranunculus corms are nice and swollen. Now they sit and air dry for 2 hours before planting in vermiculite to pre sprout. #gardening #organic-gardening #Ranunculus #anemone #corms

I also picked up a trick. 1/2 tsp of Rooting Hormone powder, the kind used for stem cuttings, and for each bowl of water used to soak the corms & they absorb the hormone really well. It helps a lot with pre sprout but also if just planting afterwards, its a ganechanger. #gardening #organic-gardening

In a 6" glass square 3" deep, I use 2" of moistened vermiculite to pre sprout the Anemone De Caen corms and Ranunculus corms. They get pressed 1.5" deep and covered by enough vermiculite only over each corm to cover their tops completely. I then moisten with a spray #gardening #organic-gardening

Pinched both dahlias. The fleshed out one got Pinched on 9/26 and the whispy one on 9/27. The whispy one still has 2 more stems growing out of the dirt but won't fill out--they're still pin-thin and the leaves are not flat at all. #gardening #dahlias #organic-gardening #floridagardening #zone10a

The tuber has "RW" for Rebecca's World written on it in sharpie. The ziploc with vermiculite it was stored in says Verdy Glory. The plant tag has Lakeland Autumn on it. A true mystery afforded to the enthusiast, not a for-profit operation. I bet it's neither. #dahlias #gardening #organic-gardening

Blood Banana now producing leaves as long as my fingertips to my shoulder. I wonder what is the reason for this drastic increase in leaf size?
