Trump does what he wants, like one does with things one owns. You don’t ask your table what room it wants to be in and most employers don’t ask employees what tasks they want to do. In Trump’s mind he owns the country and its power. He won it fair and square in the 2024 election. Everything that stands in the way of that basic premise is an obstacle to be overturned.

Celebrating the legacy of “Free Press” by pulling stories that are politically inconvenient.

This past Thursday, the United States’ oldest and most prestigious brewing school—a cornerstone of this country’s beer industry, and to some extent the world’s, since its founding in 1868—announced its relocation from Chicago to the Montreal area, citing "[r]ecent regulatory changes in the US [that] have made it much more challenging for many of our international students." It’s hard to overstate Siebel's impact on the domestic trade: it’s a “if your favorite brewer didn't go there, their favorite brewer did” sort of thing, from the Busches, Coors, and Millers of the national brewing pantheon right on down to the second-wave craft types. Trump not only take beer; Trump take America’s brewing future. An immeasurable loss.

Is the future of the GOP Jack Ciattarelli or Winsome Sears or Tucker Carlson or Nick Fuentes?

Does the Republican Party have a Nazism problem?

Isn’t their aversion to gatekeeping yet another indication that they’d rather lose and steal elections than moderate?

None of these messages are difficult to understand. They are surface level. Children in middle school regularly pull them out of these books without difficulty. Yet, for some reason, a group of incredibly powerful men who pride themselves on their own intelligence and who also consider Tolkien’s philosophy to be fundamental to their worldview seem to be having a lot of trouble.

Politics has become nationalized and that national conversation benefits the right. So if your campaign recommendations center on meeting Americans where they are, you’re often going to be arguing for acquiescence to right-wing policies and rhetorical frames. You’re going to be agreeing to battle the right in the right’s stadium in a game where the right empowers itself to change the rules. And you’re going to reinforce the idea that Democrats don’t have core beliefs of their own.

What if, instead, Democrats ran on what they believe in, in terms that sincerely reflect those beliefs? There’s still the problem of the national environment and its accompanying media universe, but by taking this approach candidates can at least better avoid charges that they’re simply pandering or using poll-tested rhetoric. Sincerity can be an affect, certainly, but it’s a lot easier to come off as sincere if you’re actually sincere.

The jagged and total nature of the onslaught against the American Republic creates a clarity: We all know what we’re talking about. You don’t need to explain. The imperfect but orderly and generally lawful old way versus this. And when you say “No Kings,” you’re saying I don’t want this. I don’t accept presidential despotism. I’m here ready to show my face and say publicly that I will never accept it.

No budget for kings. prospect.org/politics/202...
In the 1600s it had been a fairly firm principle for centuries that the king of England could not tap most of the country’s potential sources of revenue without the consent of parliament.

Charles I, crowned in 1625, did not like this idea at all. He attempted to get around it several times, alternatively exploiting archaic taxation rights, stretching other legal boundaries, repeatedly dissolving parliament, and imprisoning parliamentary leaders. That, plus general dislike of his Catholic-adjacent religious views, eventually touched off a civil war between his followers and those of parliament. Charles lost the war and later his head.

Simply saying “more speech” will not do. An ecological metaphor serves us better than a market one: Ideas flow through an online stream with few gatekeepers, where everyone dumps their waste. Adding fresh water to a cesspool does not purify it. The work here is not governmental censorship but private stewardship—editorial design and curatorial responsibility. Don’t grant free and unfettered access to long-standing garbage-dumpers without meaningful challenge and correction. The problem compounds when the young, with little ability to distinguish vetted knowledge from confident fabulism, meet “the other side” for the first time because a host has imported that viewpoint simply to gain more reach. If you’re going to expose your audience to that guest, the framing, the record, and the counters must travel with them. Otherwise you’re not informing; you’re onboarding.

America’s entire power structure has been taken over by the very same sort of dumbasses who have been yelling at all of us on the internet for years. Perhaps this was all foreordained from the very first day that email and message boards were invented. I don’t know. What I do know is that there is no need to look upon the dull, vindictive, racist monsters running our government as a new or inexplicable sort of villain. I see in them a much more familiar identity: internet commenters.

If Democrats withhold their votes until Republicans re-expand Medicaid, or pony up health-coverage subsidies, they will be causing the shutdown, because those measures have nothing to do with the annual budget. By contrast, if Democrats withhold their votes because Trump insists on the right to renege, and to use appropriated funds to break the law, he will be the one insisting on a concession—impunity for king-like power—that has nothing to do with the annual budget. He will be to blame.

“The FBI reported that fully 43 cities in those three states had higher rates of violent crime in 2024 than did D.C. More than 1.2 million people live in those cities, including more than 900,000 in Ohio alone. Yet that state’s National Guard is being deployed to D.C. to protect the capital’s 700,000-odd residents. Half a million Ohioans live in cities with higher homicide rates than D.C. Unfortunately for them, they won’t get to see National Guard troops on their streets — just on their TVs, standing around outside the Lincoln Memorial.

Or maybe the lesson here is that this isn’t really about crime at all.”

Donald Trump is bailing out his foreign fascist friend with American consumers' wallets.
Brazil’s critical exports to the US include oil, iron and steel, aircraft, key minerals (like lithium and nickel), coffee, and agricultural products, all vital for US industry, energy, and technology needs.
