I have learned, only from women, that “home-sensing” — in food, health and bath — is habitat ritual: French braid patterns, white sage scents, read tea leaves. These “activities of human locale” universalize. Person, made people. They’re impossibly bigger than plagues, terror, and mercenaries.

Towels neatly tucked into their cubbies isn’t housekeeping. It is a highly personal, localized, and universal act of habitat.

At 16 I realized in full, after all the TV war, assassinations, civil rights, war protests, Nixon’s victory salute, that political institutions were a charade. Similar, calamitous charade. But, I’d call current dissent a full-throated defense of reality.
