It's a weird mindset to hug someone you know is going to die. I became aware of everything at once, as if the world had narrowed down to only what I knew was going to be lost: the warmth of her skin, the way her breath tickled my shoulder, the rhythm of her heartbeat that I tried desparately to memorize.
It couldn't have been comfortable for her, but I held onto to her tighter than I should've, afraid that if I loosened my grip, she'd fade even quicker. It wouldn't change anything, no matter how hard I tried to cling, and I was highly aware of that, but it was as though my body was fighting the mourning my mind had already slipped into.
In that moment, time really was cruel, despite what she said earlier. It didn't matter how carefully she had tried to soften it; it stretched just enough for me to take in each caress, but it would never be enough to make it bearable, to make this moment stay.
When I finally let go, a silence filled the room that neither of us were willing to break, regardless of how suffocating it felt. And within that quiet, passed an understanding that it hadn't been just a hug, but a beginning of an absense I knew I'd spend forever to fill.
