I think you're getting unfairly dragged for this. I don't think the average American makes dinner reservations on any kind of regular basis. I do think part of the marketing is aspirational, as in "You can do the things that rich people do with our tech," but you're not wrong

Not fraud so much as ineffective ecologically. The species, pattern, and ages of trees planted matters more than how many go in the ground. 100,000 native trees is more valuable than 1,000,000 non-native trees imo, for example. This is a big topic haha news.mongabay.com/2021/09/shou...

Should tree plantations count toward reforestation goals? It’s complicated

Tree Planting expert here: this is indeed not that many trees. My org is planting 2/3s of that in one area in Madagascar that is about the size of Central Park this year.

I'm generally less knowledgeable on indigenous history, but the incursion of railroads into the American West also at least contributed to the subjugation of native peoples throughout the interior. A tool for domination.

Mind immediately jumps to the environmental consequences of railroads too. Near-extinction of bison would not have occurred otherwise, same for the mass conversion of the Plains and western prairies to agriculture. One can only hope AI effects on nature are not as drastic.

This is a good time to mention that our rainforest site in Madagascar is home to at least one entirely new frog species. Say hello to the adorable Boophis samuelsabini, known only from Ivohiboro! Photo courtesy of Edmund Basham #Conservation #Biology #Nature #Madagascar

Unsolicited pitch: selling wellness products (ironically) that actually do good in the world (unironically). EX: @phoenixconservancy.bsky.social launched Marula Oil for skin/haircare that legitimately restores rainforest in Madagascar. www.phoenixconservancy.org/marula

Just did research on these, and I have to say, everything I found suggested they were not worth it. They seem unreliable across the board and regularly break down after a year of use, including the really nice ones.

We're also looking for partners in getting Marula Oil into the hands of folks in the U.S. If you or someone you know works in sustainability, cosmetics, a related field, or even just runs a retail shop that might want some, please get in touch! #Madagascar #Conservation #Cosmetics #Beauty

What’s the biggest threat to rainforests in Madagascar? 🌴 A lot of people might say deforestation, or poaching, or wildfires, or climate change. Those are certainly all threats, but they’re not the biggest threat. Poverty is. #Conservation #Restoration #Madagascar #Nature

Great Plains and Great Skies 🌤️ It takes soul to love a prairie, and mine is full after a week collecting seeds to restore this incredible, endangered landscape. 📍Sunrise over Fort Pierre National Grassland, SD, USA #Nature #Photography

Given this, it's remarkable that 1) people don't use buttons when available and especially 2) people don't keep an eye on oncoming traffic while crossing. We can't expect every car to stop every time! Onus is still on drivers ofc

Cruelties across centuries created the conditions that made USAID a necessity. It's never enough, but so many people dedicated their lives to giving others a chance. USAID was a miracle of an organization despite its flaws. Musk is an evil, wretched thing unfit for cohabitation with the rest of us.

... clearing trails almost inherently means not that many people are going to be around in the first place! Popular trails get cleared first in the early season before crowds arrive anyways, and those places are few and far between to begin with.

The blanket ban on chainsaws is ridiculous. I'd favor imposing some limits, like during dawn and dusk hours to protect birds and frogs, disallowing nighttime use for nocturnal animals, and minimizing use in peak visitation periods to preserve the "wilderness" quality many people seek. BUT...

I've always understood that "motorized equipment" focuses on modes of transport, not handheld devices. The line is "no ... motorized equipment or motor boats," which is sandwiched between other lines about not using motor vehicles, landing aircraft, or using "other forms of mechanical transport."
Text from Section 4 of the Wilderness Act. "PROHIBITION OF CERTAIN USES (c) Except as specifically provided for in this Act, and subject to existing private rights, there shall be no commercial enterprise and no permanent road within any wilderness area designated by this Act and except as necessary to meet minimum requirements for the administration of the area for the purpose of this
Act (including measures required in emergencies involving the health and safety of persons within the area), there shall be no temporary road, no use of motor vehicles, motorized equipment or motorboats, no landing of aircraft, no other form of mechanical transport, and no structure or installation within any such area. "

EXHAUSTED of DST discourse pretending like there isn't an absolute consensus among experts about what the right choice is. Permanent standard time is it, full stop. Any argument to the contrary is about personal preferences. The number of people who throw out expert advice on this topic is maddening

Generally not for any global scenarios, no. Different technologies are studied based on supposed CO2 or CO2-equivalent reductions, along with costs and other consequences, but I'm not aware of anyone applying data to global models outside of hypotheticals. I don't think that's really being priced in
