ONLIVES goes beyond producing new tools and social technologies tailored to today’s extremist threats, including NVE: it supports the procedural and structural adaptation of problem-owning organisations themselves (policy makers, police authorities, civil society) to keep up with these evolutions

The threat posed by criminal extremism to liberal democratic societies is in an accelerating state of flux: its manifestations increasingly blur lines with other forms of serious criminality, test established ideological nomenclatures, ramp up severity of violence, and victimises young people

🔍 Findings support proportionate integration of case histories and emphasis on trauma-informed responses where relevant, while cautioning against treating domestic abuse as a predictive marker of extremist risk

CTRG @ UCL @ctrg.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
❓ Where there is an overlap, this might be explained by perpetration of domestic abuse and extremist violence as part of a continuum of coercive violence, or victim-offender overlaps where victimisation comprises trauma that can shape susceptibility to extremist narratives, attitudes, & behaviours

CTRG @ UCL @ctrg.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Key findings & takeaways 👇 📊 According to the evidence base, domestic abuse is common in extremist samples, but not universal nor necessarily unique to these samples - the link is likely associative, not causal

💻 Perhaps "The Com" should not be the organising principle for response frameworks. Instead, responses may be better structured around the pattern and predominance of harm, recognising that named online communities represent one setting within a broader and rapidly evolving online harm ecology.

CTRG @ UCL @ctrg.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
🔃 The labels "victim" and "perpetrator" don't seem particularly useful when talking about engagement with The Com. Most of the young people in our sample were both, and assigning one label over the other risks missing either important vulnerabilities or significant risks.

The paper identifies common patterns in how clinicians formulate why they become engaged, which we visualise as pathways linking underlying vulnerabilities to the functions that engagement appears to serve. Some further takeaways:
