1/4 @apnews.com has told some video and photo guild members in the U.S. that the last day for those affected by layoffs will be August 21. Meanwhile the company is actively hiring for these same jobs in India.
On a red background with the AP News Guild Logo, white text reads: "Layoff updates. AP has told some video and photo guild members in the U.S. that the last day for those affected by layoffs will be August 21. Meanwhile the company is actively hiring for these same jobs in India. On a red background with the AP News Guild logo at the top of the page, white text reads, "Meanwhile over on likedin..." Then there is a screengrab of the union on Linkedin reposting Vice president of news and head of production, Derl McCrudden's post about the new video and photo positions in India.

The union's comments read: "Derl cheekily forgot to mention that the AP is laying off dozens of producers across the U.S., LatAm and Europe to create this hub in India. Specifically in the U.S., the company is seeking to eliminate positions covered by the Guild in yet another attempt to take away good union jobs. The Associated Press is terminating legacy producers and skilled journalists to expand a new hub where they are "not looking for perfection." The company is sacrificing reliability to save pennies. These new jobs are breaking the hearts of AP journalists who dedicated decades of service in the name of independent news. Offshoring is not expanding."

We turned the heat up on Hearst and wished King George a happy early Independence Day 🔥 Thank you to our fellow labor unions who joined us and everyone who showed support (including those truck drivers and EMTs) and shout-out to our fellow Hearst unions! We're just getting started ✊🗞️

We’re demanding that Hearst bargain in good faith with all four shops. Local journalism needs fair contracts because local journalism needs JOURNALISTS. From Austin to Albany to Dallas to Connecticut, stand with us as we fight for the future of local news.

How we’re going to win fair contracts. At the bargaining table, we’re negotiating things like: - Fair wages so we can afford to live in the cities we cover - Protections from being laid off due to AI - A fair and transparent progressive discipline policy - Regular raises and decent 401K matches

Unionized Hearst Newspapers staff in Austin, Albany, Connecticut and Dallas are on the same page: We’re ready to fight for fair contracts and respect from our employer. Today, @newsguild.org members in 3 states took a coordinated lunch break and gathered in person and on Zoom to talk about 1 thing:

We call on management to reinstate our colleague – and to come to the bargaining table ready to negotiate a fair contract. Among our demands: A fair and transparent progressive discipline policy, so our colleagues receive the respect they deserve and dismissals like this end.

Over the past three years, Hearst has fired at least nine newsroom employees, often over trivial issues. In this most recent case, the company published three of the reporter’s stories in print the day after he was fired.

Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
He is not the first. Hearst CT has repeatedly prioritized arbitrary discipline and firings over career development and robust coverage of CT's communities and stories. Instead of feeling supported and inspired, staff say they are being reminded of their place while bracing for the next write-up.

Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
If it seems to you like there are fewer journalists covering Connecticut, you’re right. This week, those ranks grew thinner: Hearst CT unjustly fired a highly experienced reporter who was respected by his peers, sources and readers.

We believe that the proposals we will share are a fair, equitable and attainable path toward that. We’re prepared to bargain in good faith with Hearst. Will Hearst commit to doing the same?

Hearst’s Connecticut Newspapers have been – and should remain – the state’s paper of record that can set both national and company standards as the media landscape continues to evolve.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
A newsroom that can competitively recruit emerging journalists, fairly retain the ones already on staff and surround them with experienced veterans to help foster growth paves the way toward sustainability and success.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
And while we're optimistic about our work and where we’re headed as an organization, we are not naive. This contract will help serve the future of Connecticut news and the journalists who contribute to it. At the end of the day, all our energies are centered around doing what’s best for everyone.

Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Connecticut has changed, and our state's news institutions were not immune to that change: we have seen many of our 169 municipalities turn into news deserts as newsrooms are consolidated and shuttered.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Our goal is to build a contract that respects our history and expertise, and is transparent about raises and salaries. We only want to keep this news organization relevant for the next century or two.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
In some cases, their parents and grandparents worked for the same paper, and now their sons and daughters aren’t paid well enough to raise their own families in those towns. That’s what we are fighting for.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Some of those journalists, veterans and rookies, are not paid enough to live in the communities they cover. Think about that. They were raised in these towns.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
That’s why we are excited to be here, and why we hope the newsroom leaders who also live in those communities will be an active part of these discussions going forward.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
These are newspapers that literally helped shape this nation. They employ journalists who have covered the communities in which they live for decades.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Before Hearst CT was a single, statewide news organization there were community newspapers, each one the paper of record in their own city and town. The New Haven Register has been around since 1812. The Stamford Advocate since 1829, the Republican-American since 1844. That’s a 200-year history.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
We also want to build a newsroom where diversity of thoughts, ideas, and experience levels are welcome and a place where up-and-coming young talent can be mentored by experienced veterans. We believe this contract can be a vehicle to move us towards that shared goal.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
We are a collection of newsrooms that want to continue reflecting the community we serve. We want a vibrant, equitable workplace that offers a stable working environment and grows journalism meaningfully.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
The contract we will work towards will help continue to build upon that foundation. We, in partnership with our colleagues in Albany, Austin, Dallas and San Francisco, begin these deliberations in good faith and recognize it takes a lot to be here in the room.
100
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
We all understand the mettle, ambition and relentless work ethic required for an achievement of that scale. We also recognize that it cannot be accomplished without the necessary support and investment from ownership that allows the newsroom to build and retain a staff capable of continued success.
120
Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Hearst, CT Insider and all the local newspapers under its stewardship are collectively the paper of record for all of Connecticut. This honor, as both Hearst and its members well know, is the kind that can separate Hearst from its competition and maintain it as an industry leader.

Connecticut News Guild @ctnewsguild.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Hearst reporting has led to new laws and changes to existing laws in Connecticut. Our work clearly has impact. Time and time again, it is cited regularly as primary sources, and has won state and national awards.

When I worked at the Stamford Advocate (a Hearst paper) a decade ago, all work outside the hours of 9-5 was expected to be off-book. School board meetings that started at 7pm? Source meetings? Breaking news? Cover it, of course, but don't dare put it on your time card.
