Weird, a nearly identical X-shaped IBM building exists in La Gaude, France. I wonder if there are more?

I haven’t! Probably material that requires a trip to a library, which I don’t necessarily mind.

I always thought under-slung BART wouldn’t fit through the Golden Gate Bridge towers, but it turns out BART is small and the bridge is huge. Here is a mockup in 1/100 scale, BART fits easily.
A photo of a 1/100 scale model of a tower of the Golden Gate Bridge, showing a paper cutout of a cross section of a BART line under the road deck. It fits easily.

Would not wipe the floor at all with frequent stops, 79 mph MAS, and long consist. Only EMU wipes that floor.

Yes I should have qualified my statement with the word “almost.” With frequent stops, low maximum speed and long consists such as Toronto’s, it’s basically a wash.

(ballast weight = prime mover, generator, fuel tank)

Clem Tillier @ctillier.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Barely any faster, unless there are few stops and high speeds. Ballast weight is what NJT does with ALP45, brute force.

Excellent point. Locomotive-hauled electric is as slow as diesel (higher power is offset by lower tractive effort)

Infrastructure is good for centuries: in 200 years trains may be obsolete but the laws of physics (curvature, speed) will still hold.

A major cost saving measure is to build cut-and-cover with little or no overburden and especially importantly NO cost-maximizing station mezzanines. Mezzanine bloat is one of the top causes of the astronomical cost of U.S. transit infrastructure.
