RIP Jim Knipfel. One of the greats.

Red Dawn was the first PG-13 movie and it was, amazingly, released about 2 weeks after I turned 13. Seeing that was when I realized I'd be the kid in the opening who gets a bullet in his head, not one of the protagonists. I've lived with that self-awareness ever since.

Unless it's in Spotlight, which is an unlikely spot for a Palme winner.

Even more odd is that it's opening on October 9 so it would be perfectly set up for early NYFF screenings.

I haven't been to TIFF in well more than a decade but I still long for the Cromwell Suites. But then that just makes me think of Jim Ridley and then I get all sad.

I got personal and fiery in my latest newsletter piece about Disclosure Day. I discuss why I loved the film, my own sensitive nature, having hope for humanity, the troubling misreadings of the film, and why cynicism is not wisdom. angelicabastien.substack.com/p/disclosure...

Open Your Fucking Heart: Why I Loved Disclosure Day, A Review and Rant in 17 Notes
Spielberg's Disclosure Day is a film of complex emotionality worth wrestling with. It led me to think about my own stubborn hopefulness and the problem with mistaking cynicism for wisdom.

It's been exhibited 3 or 4 times in OH so I've never really looked into it. It'd be a matter of getting a loan from one of the instutitions that own it (I know the Gund Gallery at Kenyon is one nearby). Dunno know how exacting the tech rider is but equipment and installation is probably the big cost

I wish I didn't have such a busy day so I could research the name of that place. I can picture it so well. Especially the people, like Jim Ridley, who've left us. Haven't been to TIFF since 2013 and still mainly recall the Yonge/Bloor years.

Would love to rewatch this now. I'm sure it plays differently in 2025 than it did when I saw it at NYFF in 2024. Super emotional to watch it with many of the film's participants sitting seats away from me.

It's also one of the most famous metaphorical images from the AIDS crisis by the great radical artist David Wojnarowicz. Since Astor's film seems like a COVID movie, I'm guessing the public health crisis allusion is intentional. benton.uconn.edu/anthropocene...

John Waters famously quipped you should not fuck anyone who has no books in their home. We should update the sentiment to be about people who create, then post AI-generated Miyazaki images. As the “art” proliferates, so should our outrage and capacity to shame/ostracize those who spread it.

The Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio! We just had an extensive film preservation festival highlighted by a screening of a newly restored 35mm print of THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR with the Library of Congress archivist and Ivan Dixon's amazing daughter in person.

Leigh's persona taking questions on stage is quite different than his off-stage demeanor. I had one of the loveliest dinners of my life with him (asking lots of questions about being on the Cannes jury in '97). I imagine a Maron interview is closer to being onstage than a casual dinner though.

It's a beautiful thing! Although they need to release Hard Truths, Nickel Boys, and Universal Language here already! Those (plus The Brutalist) were the ones I was most sorry to miss at NYFF and I'm paying for it every day!

Her other films are more traditional smart political docs but this one is as personal as it gets and more accessible. It's really tweaking high school movie/media conventions, hence the misleading poster. It's a shame it's getting lost. My personality for the rest of the year is advocating for it.

Had a great week of NYFFing this year with exceptional projection and even better sound. My first festival in 3.5 years and first at NYFF in 8. My 5 faves: 5. THE DUPES (Saleh) 4. HIT MAN (Linklater) 3. JANET PLANET (Baker) 2. PICTURES OF GHOSTS (Mendonça Filho) 1. LA CHIMERA (Rohrwacher)

I know I don't know many folks here but also don't feel like posting at the other place. I'll be NYFFing for the first time since 2015 if anyone is there. I've got a super full schedule with P&I+Public screenings and two Sondheim productions so meal time will be a rarity!
